Some rain on the usually clear and blue Cote d’Azur clouded the picture even further, but there appears plenty of competitive cars. Ferrari and McLaren topped the two practice sessions respectively, but also fast were Lotus, Williams and Sauber. However Red Bull looked to be struggling.
“We couldn’t try the changes that we wanted to make, because of the weather,” the team’s Dr Helmut Marko said. “This is bad for us because we are not where we want to be, and we urgently needed this time.”
Caterham had issues in Practice Session one with Heikki Kovalainen’s car appearing to suffer an engine failure towards the end of the session, which was subsequently red flagged and not restarted due to a lack of time. Tom Webb, Head of Communications for Caterham, told Sky Sports that Kovalainen had suffered an ‘axle failure’ and that it was likely that he would get a new engine for the remainder of the weekend.
