Malaysian Grand Prix Red Flagged

The Malaysian Grand Prix has been stopped with 24 laps remaining due to torrential rain and un-drivable conditions in Sepang.

Heavy thunderstorms hit the circuit mid-race prompting the deployment of the safety car. But even under the safety car drivers were aquaplaning off the track in the torrential conditions.

The drivers, who are currently out of their cars on the starting grid, are keen to see the race stopped completely.

“The visibility is nothing,” Fernando Alonso told the BBC. “With the amount of water we have now it is a really dangerous circuit and we can have a serious accident, I think, if we restart, so fingers crossed we don’t start again.”

Race director Charlie Whiting is currently deciding whether to stop the race completely.

The current race order is:

1. Jenson Button (Brawn GP)
2. Timo Glock (Toyota)
3. Nick Heidfeld (BMW Sauber)
4. Jarno Trulli (Toyota)
5. Rubens Barrichello (Brawn GP)
6. Lewis Hamilton (McLaren)
7. Nico Rosberg (Williams)
8. Mark Webber (Red Bull)
9. Felipe Massa (Ferrari)
10. Sebastian Bourdais (Toro Rosso)

Should the race be re-started half points would be awarded as less than three quarters of the race have been completed.
