Schumacher given grid drop for Spa

Schumi guilty of impeding Barrichello; Renault and Mercedes fined

Michael Schumacher has been given a ten place grid penalty for the Belgian Grand Prix, following his controversial driving in Hungary.

The German may well have caused a serious accident after he forced the Williams of Rubens Barrichello up against the pit wall, as the Brazilian attempted to pass.

Barrichello immediately slammed his former team-mate after the race, describing his move as ‘crazy’.

Although Schumacher believed that he had done nothing wrong, race stewards charged him with “illegitimately impeded car 9 during an overtaking manoeuvre.”

As a result, the Mercedes driver will start ten places behind where he manages to qualifying in Spa.

Meanwhile race stewards have fined Renault $50,000 for the unsafe release of Robert Kubica during his pit stop.

Kubica returned to the pitroad in the path of Adrian Sutil’s Force India, resulting in the two colliding.

Mercedes has also been given the same fine for the unsafe release of Nico Rosberg, who lost a tyre as he was released from his box.
