Rosberg to McLaren or Brawn?

Williams driver Nico Rosberg has been the subject of renewed speculation concerning his whereabouts next season. The German star, whose contract with Williams ends at the end of this season and has long aired his desire to leave, is most likely to go to either McLaren or to Brawn, according to the latest rumours.

McLaren have been seen as the most probable destination for Rosberg up until this week. The Woking team’s partners Mercedes Benz are thought to want a German driver in one of their cars, and current incumbent Heikki Kovalainen has not impressed this season, albeit in poor machinery. Mercedes motorsport head honcho Norbert Haug has admitted speaking to Rosberg, although nothing has yet been made public.

“Nico is a candidate with whom we are talking,” Haug said.

But this week’s story that Mercedes are set to buy into Brawn has thrown a spanner into the works of a potential Rosberg-McLaren link-up. Mercedes are reputed to be preparing a bid for 75% of Brawn, which would make them the dominant partner which could then remould the team as it wished. First on its shopping list would presumably be that German driver that would play so well in the carmaker’s home market.

Rosberg’s future may well depend on the success or otherwise of Mercedes’ future plans with regard to Brawn.
