Rome plans 2012 street race

With the recent addition and success of street circuits to the Formula One calendar, Rome is hoping to follow suit and host an F1 street race in 2012.

Maurizio Flammini, the organiser of the Rome GP, said that he first discussed the idea of a street circuit back in January and that a deal has been completed, however fully approval is not due for another few months yet.

Flammini has said that there is much support for the idea, including support from Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo. Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno has said that he is not looking to replace the Italian Grand Prix at Monza – instead, he is hoping that Italy will be permitted to host two F1 races.

Despite this, it appears that many people in Monza are not happy about the plans. In fact, Monza mayor told Italian newspaper Gazzetta, “This is the latest act of arrogance from a parasite capital city that has lived for the past 2,000 years with oxygen stolen from other towns.”
