Replacing Australia with Russia?

According to the latest rumours, Bernie Ecclestone is looking to scrap the Australian Grand Prix in favour of a Russian Grand Prix.

Melbourne bosses have recently come under fire from Ecclestone for not wanting to turn their race into a night race after 2010. British newspaper the Daily Mirror has now claimed that Ecclestone will be travelling to St. Petersburg in the near future to discuss the possibility of replacing the Australian Grand Prix with a race in Russia from 2010 onwards.

The paper has claimed that Ecclestone will be meeting with St. Petersburgs governor, and possibly even the president Vladimir Putin, for talks about building a new circuit in the country.

It is not the first time that Russian F1 Grand Prix rumours have surfaced, but it appears these latest rumours have a little more substance behind them. “Nothing is done yet,” Eccelstone said. “But this could be an interesting development for the sport. We would like to get it in the calendar as soon as we can but that depends on them it is down to how long it takes them to get the circuit ready.”
