KERS to be introduced in three steps

FIA President Max Mosley has written a letter to the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport outlining how the news energy recovery system will be incorporated into Formula One.

Mosley explained that KERS will be introduced gradually in three phases 2009 will see the introduction of the system. Then, in 2011, more energy collected under braking will be allowed to be fed into the powertrain during acceleration via a driver-activated boost button. Finally, in 2013 and coinciding with a new low cost engine formula, energy will be collected from multiple sources.

Mosley has now opened the floor to teams and manufacturers and invited them to comment on the proposal before June when the World Motor Sport Council meets again.
