Jacarepagua circuit to be demolished

The Autódromo de Jacarepaguá in Brazil is to be demolished. The circuit, also known as the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet, hosted the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix between 1978 and 1990 and more recently, held the MotoGP Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Jacarepaguá circuit is to be demolished to allow for new structures to be built to help the city s bid for the 2016 Olympic Games bid. So far, the plan for the site it to become an Olympic Training Centre.

It isn t the first time that the circuit has been in-line for destruction in 2005, preparations for the Pan American Games suggested that the circuit would need to go to make room for a new sports complex however the planned track was only 1.67 miles long, too short for most international racing series, and the plan to demolish the track was abandoned.
