Is Alonso’s departure imminent?

It seems Alonso s departure from McLaren is inevitable and imminent if German newspaper Bild-Zeitung is to be believed.

It has been reported that the executive board of Mercedes-Benz have ruled that Fernando Alonso should not represent their brand in 2008. Mercedes-Benz are a majority shareholder in McLaren and also supply their engines, therefore a major decision such as this will no doubt have a massive effect on the decision whether to keep Alonso on-board with the team or not.

Alonso s contract was initially for two years and therefore the Spaniard should be racing for the McLaren team next season. However relationships within the team are said to be very strained and, following a chaotic year, no-one would be surprised to see the Spaniard either take a sabbatical or move to another team for the 2008 season.

Norbert Haug has not denied the possibility that Alonso may move at the end of the season.

“If someone expresses his absolute resolve to not want to do something, then there are ways to manage that,” Haug explained. “We have a contract, and after the last race of the season we will see what the situation is.”
