Horner sees Alonso as main rival

Christian Horner has let slip that Fernando Alonso is the driver his Red Bull squad are aiming to beat.

In an interview with the BBC, Horner was asked about his team’s reliability problems and said that it was important not to be distracted. But he went on to say he was glad “Fernando” had not won the Australian race.

“It’s important not to let [reliability issues] distract you,” he said.

“But it’s comforting that Fernando hasn’t won both races.”

This may be taken to mean that Red Bull see the Ferrari man as their main rival rather than his team-mate, McLaren or Mercedes. Team bosses rarely let slip information of that sort, preferring usually to aim at beating everybody.

Red Bull are in an excellent position following qualifying to make good on their target of finishing ahead of Alonso, given that they occupy first and third on the grid, while the Spaniard is down in 19th.
