Hope for a 2008 San Marino GP

Massimo Marchignoli, the mayor of Imola, is optimistic that the San Marino Grand Prix will return to the Formula 1 calendar after a year’s absence in 2007. Marchignoli has claimed that Bernie Ecclestone has said there is no chance of the San Marino Grand Prix being on the 2007 calendar however if the circuit is revamped to plan, he has promised it a slot on the 2008 calendar.

The work to modernize the circuit has already started. 8 million Euro, out of the 10 million required, has been recevied by the Italian government. This money will be used to rebuild the pit complex which will be 380 metres wide and will include a three story building which will eventually house offices and race-control.

The complex will be slightly closer to that Rivazza corner than it is currently. The chicane ahead of the start/finish line will be straightened and new grandstands built for the spectators.

The building works are expected to be finished by the end of May 2007.
