Felipe Massa was quickest in free practice session 1 this morning. The Ferrari driver looked comfortable, finishing seven tenths ahead of his nearest rival, Lewis Hamilton. Kovalainen was just behind his team-mate in third place, with the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen rounding out the top four.
The only drama of the morning came from Fernando Alonso, who finished the session sixth place. Unfortunately, the Spaniard stopped on track on the approach to the 180 corner towards the end of the session with smoke billowing from his engine.
Jarno Trulli also had a small spin at the Adelaide hairpin but was able to recover and carry on with his session.
