Coulthard hit with grid penalty

David Coulthard will drop five places on the grid for the Monaco Grand Prix due to a gearbox change needed after his shunt in qualifying.

The Red Bull driver suffered a huge 185kph shunt into the barriers in qualifying when his RB4 snapped away from him on the exit of the tunnel.

The initial impact with the armco ripped with wheels off the car sending Coulthard careering into down the escape road and into the barriers.

While the Scott stepped away from the accident unhurt, the damage to his car was significant enough to require a new gearbox, which, under the new regulations, will demote him to fifteenth on the grid.

This promotes Timo Glock to 10th, Jenson Button to 11th, Nick Heidfeld to 12th, Kazuki Najakima to 13th and Rubens Barrichello to 14th.

Coulthard is the third driver to be hit with a gearbox penalty this weekend. Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel and Force India’s Giancarlo Fisichella have also been dealt penalties.
