Briatore: 60% chance Alonso will return

Flavio Briatore has said that there is a 60% chance that Fernando Alonso will return to Renault for the 2008 season.

Alonso has recently split from McLaren and is currently a free agent, weighing up all his options before he chooses a race seat for 2008. Many teams have yet to announce their full 2008 line-up when Alonso has made his decision, the driver swaps will begin in earnest. Renault are the team that Alonso is rumoured to have the strongest links with, and Briatore has made no secret of the fact he would like the Spaniard back in the team.

Renault will certainly have different drivers next year,” Briatore explained. “There is a 60% chance Alonso will be with us. Toyota and Red Bull are also in the race we have an advantage because we know him.”

It is believed that the delay in reaching a decision over his future is partly down to espionage allegations currently hanging over the Renault team. Alonso will ore than likely wish to see the outcome of the World Motor Sport Council heading on 6th December when Renault will face charges of illegally possessing McLaren information before he decides whether to join the team or not.

Briatore is expecting to announce his driver line-up before then. “It will be decided between today and the day after tomorrow,” he claimed.
