Alonso once again on top in Monaco

Fernando Alonso once again came out on top over the course of the second free practice for the Monaco Grand Prix, as light rain played its part in the latter stages of the session.

The Ferrari driver became the first driver to break into the one minute fourteen seconds barrier with a stunning lap with less than an hour a later.

Nico Rosberg improved to second for Mercedes, a tenth behind the Spaniard, with Sebastian Vettel in third.

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button failed to challenge the top of the times, finishing sixth and ninth respectively.

Light rain fell for the last half hour of the session, but that did not deter the drivers from continuing to work on their set-ups for Sunday’s Grand Prix. However, as the track temperature dropped, nobody could get close to matching Alonso’s time.

Robert Kubica was once again the first driver to set a benchmark time, pushing his R30 to its limits. However, the Pole soon found himself further down the times in eight.

The incident ran relatively untroubled with no big accidents. However a number of drivers once again encountered traffic, giving the teams a taste of what things might be like for Saturday’s first segment of qualifying.
