Alguersuari in as Bourdais takes his bow

Toro Rosso tester Jaime Alguersuari is to step in at Toro Rosso because Sebastien Bourdais has left the team, Forumula1.com understands.

The highly-rated young Catalan will drive alongside Sebastian Buemi at the Italian concern at the next race in Hungary, and in so doing become the youngest ever driver to drive in a grand prix at the age of 19.

Alguersuari’s move into the race seat is thought to have been greased by Spanish oil company Repsol, who sponsor him and are thought to be tying up a sponsorship agreement with Toro Rosso. He is thought to have til the end of the season to prove his worth, at which point he will either continue or be replaced by world rally champion Sebastian Loeb who is reported to be interested in the seat.

Sebastien Bourdais had a largely undistinguished season and a half in the sport. After dominating American single seaters, he was outclassed by Sebastian Vettel in his first season and was lucky to be invited back. A series of poor results compared to his new team-mate Buemi this season are thought to have contributed to his demise.
