Despite the fact the championship will only have 1 race overseas in 2011, the series has scored "International" status. This means that we can host 12 Australiasian championship events (Despite the fact we have 13 in 2011, however that would probaley due to the late exist of Bahrain from the calendar and the suprise addition of Queensland Raceway) and up to 6 overseas. However Singapore is almost certain to be added in 2012 and the v8 Series has been constantly linked with South Korea, India, Qatar & Japan.
But that's the future, we dont need to worry about that now. 2011 is just around the corner, with the pre-season test at Eastern Creek just 1 week away. But there have been alot of changes over the very short off-season:
Driver Changes:
*Defending Champ, James Courtney will race with the Holden Racing Team in 2011. The move comes as Jim Beam Racing had an unknown future and the Ford Performance Racing deal fell over at the last minute. The only big team in hunt of a driver was the Holden Racing Team coming off a season to forget.
*Will Davison had a season to forget, he came in 22nd position after finishing 2nd just one year before. He has moved from the Holden Racing Team to a Trading Post backed Ford Performance Racing car.
*Greg Murphy is all but confirmed in a Pepsi Max backed Kelly Racing Team car. The move just comes after only one season at Paul Morris Motorsport. Murphy has been struggling since 2005 in the series, many believe Paul Morris Motorsport was his last chance. It seems he has gotten a 2nd last chance.
*Jason Bargwanna is leaving the Kelly Racing Team after only one season. He will drive at Brad Jones Racing until Jason Richards has overcome his battle with cancer. The deal is akward to say the least because it is unknown when Richards will return. But it is safe to say Bargwanna will do all events up until Bathurst. It is likely that Jason Richards may not race in 2011. But Brad Jones Racing will put Richards in the car as soon as he is ready. Get Well Soon Jase!
Entering v8 Supercars:
*Son of the great Allan Moffat, James Moffat, has been signed by Jim Beam Racing to replace the reigning champ, James Courtney. He has had promising results in the Fujitsu Series over the last 2 years and deserves a go. People tend to say he is over-rated and got the drive on $$$.....but he is actually quite talented and he got the drive all on ability. I don't think his father would have let him drive if he knew he only got it because of money.
Re-Enterting v8 Supercars:
*The talented David Reynolds will race a Stratco Kelly Racing Team car in 2011. He has been very unlucky in recent years. He almost got a podium in his debut year but a tyre blew in the last few laps. He was dumped by Walkinshaw Performance for the cash-strapped Andrew Thompson for 2010. In the 2010 enduros he was set for a podium with Will Davison, but Will crashed it in the last few laps. Is this the break Reynolds deserves?
*Steve Owen will race in a VIP Petfoods Paul Morris Motorsport car for 2011. 2010 was a great year for Owen, he easily won the Fujitsu Series, parterned runner-up, Jamie Whincup in the enduros (And was on pace with him...some would say he was actually quicker than him at Phillip Island). He got his first v8 Supercar win on the streets of the Gold Coast with Jamie Whincup in a crash-fest too. He has had a few chances before, but this is his last and best chance to make it.
Existing v8 Supercars:
*Andrew Thompson has been left with-out a drive in 2011 as Walkinshaw Performance (Which runs the Holden Racing Team and Bundaberg Red Racing) reducded the amount of cars they are running in 2011, from 4 to 3. However he has suprisingly been linked with Team Vodafone for the the enduros
*Steven Richards, after 2 seasons of poor performances, Ford Performance Racing sacked Steven. He was unable to secure a drive for 2011, but insists he is not retiring.
*Tony Ricciardello, the man constantly at the back of the back in a Kelly Racing Team car, will not race full time in 2011...or probaley ever again. We might see him at the enduros if a team needs a driver with some $$$
*Daniel Gaunt competed in the first half of the 2010 championship but was suprisingly sacked by Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport half-way through the year
*Possibley Jason Richards, it is unknown how long he will take to get back into the sport.
Team/Sponsor Changes
*Red Rooster has left HRT and has been replaced by Rockstar Energy Drinks
*Centaur Racing, run by the D'Alberto family, is swithing to Ford in 2011. They even own some Holden dealerships which makes the move even more suprising. The team's driver, Tony D'Alberto will drive their 2010 Holden at the test day next week and in the first round of 2011. They will debut a Ford Performance Racing car at the Clipsal 500. Wilson Security will be the team's major sponsor
*Lucky 7 will sponsor the 3rd Stone Brothers Racing car (James Rosenberg Racing) of Tim Slade in 2011. They sponsored all 3 SBR cars last year
*Trading Post will sponsor Will Davion's Ford Performance Racing car. It comes after only one year sponsoring Jason Bright's car at Brad Jones Racing.
*Pepsi Max will sponsor Greg Murphy's Kelly Racing Team car in 2011. Pepsi Max almost didn't sponsor a car in 2011 after numerous deals fell through
*It was believed Jason Bargwanna will race in ROCK Energy car until Jason Richards in better. But this seems unlikely now. He'll run a blank car for the first event with a few sponsors on it
*Paul Morris Motorsport has lost the Castrol backing in 2011 and it will be replaced by VIP Petfoods.
*Tenko Autosports (sausage Johnson Racing's 3rd Car) will race without the support of DJR in 2011.
*Charlie Schwerkolt sold his share of DJR. sausage Johnson is now the majority shareholder with the boss of Crimsafe a minor shareholder. Charlie Schwerkolt however owns a licence and will lease it to DJR for 2011 and 2012.
*Red Rooster has left HRT after only 1 year. They notabley replaced the famous Lion on the bonnet in 2010. There postion has been overtaken by Rockstar Energy Drinks.
*It is unknown who'll sponsor Triple F Racing. They are in talks with 2 sponsors who are rivals with each other. So they dont want to burn any bridges.
*Bundaberg Red Racing has dropped the "Red" branding.
