Last night, Ewan and I met up and had an interesting chat about Formula One, and one of the issues raised was today (supposedly) being the end of an era in Formula One.
It it is not a case of whether Mosley is liked or disliked and whether he has been good or bad for Formula One over his tenure. For me, Mosley's time has come. Things have gone stale and Mosley has turned the FIA into a dictatorship, most noticeably in the last decade or so.
The matter is about who comes after him. The FIA has all the apparatus necessary for the continuation of Mosley's dictatorship and all of his supporters will still be in the FIA ensuring his wishes are carried out. But some of Mosley's henchmen are even more vicious than he is. Donnelly, for instance, is a thug and people seem genuinely afraid of him in the paddock. At the moment, his position in the FIA is not constitutional, so backed with Mosley's powers, he can do as he pleases.
Moreover, the changes that Todt wants to make are only pleasing at first sight. The creation of commissioners for each sport, rather than being a good thing, will put a lot of power into the hands of one person. And one of the people touted for the Formula One post is Donnelly.
Mosley, then, could be the lesser of the evils which might face Formula One in the near future. Regardless of who is elected, but especially if it is Todt, things will remain the same or could potentially become worse.
