I think he means, does a team see problems on telemetry before the engine lunches itself. :)

i know that Schumi (in this case) heard nothing untill the engine lost power and suddenly broke..but i don't think that telemetry says anything...

well sometimes they can see the engine temperature rise dramatically before it blows or like with MS it just blew up out of no where

It depends on the specific problem, sometimes the failure happens spontaneously or other times they can see from the telemetry such as the time when mclaren saw that something was wrong with dc's engine and brought him in.
