A racing complex that will feature a road track designed by former Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has received approval for construction.

The site for 'Area 27' is located in the South Okanagan region of Canada's British Columbia province and has been designated for motorsport for the next 110 years.

Villeneuve, who won his title with Williams in 1997, is part of the main group behind the project, along with president Bill Drossos, Trevor Seibert, and David King.

"I have always relished the challenge of designing an exciting track, taking into account the single lap excitement, combined with wheel-to-wheel racing opportunities," Villeneuve said on the Area 27 website.

"The goal is to design a track I would be proud of getting pole position on, where the fans would also enjoy watching an exciting race."

The Villeneuve-designed 3-mile road course will be constructed to the FIA's Grade 2 standard, meaning it can potentially host major motorsport events in the future.
