The magical people generally tend to keep themselves to themselves, but around this time of year, the sharp eyed of you may have noticed a strange phenomena particularly prevalent in our establishments of higher education. The witches, wizards and warlocks can be seen in public. Rarely ever seen, they appear on mass, rather like the flying ants that all emerge without warning from cracks and crevices to swarm in glory, and then they’re gone.
They wear their magical clothes with pride, wizard capes and wizard hats, though they try to disguise the latter by squashing it flat. It’s not the most successful disguise for such a learned group, there is clearly mystery and magic in such a hat. Magic wands you will not see, but we’ll come to that later.
Prior to this ‘coming out’, The Magicals masquerade as students of medicine, of literature, of physics, of media studies etc, etc…... and of law. Law. I mention particularly law. Of all the fronts chosen by The Magicals to conceal what they are really about, law is the one they have the most affinity for; so close is the magic conducted in a courtroom to the real magic performed in secret, that sometimes the divide becomes blurred. So you will see some Magicals performing their day job in their magical clothes. They get away with it, we put it down to the quaint quirks of our judicial system, but for those in the know………
For the less observant, there are some signs to look out for when spotting Magicals. The obvious one is the wizard cloak and the squashed wizard hat, but there are others. The maniacal eyes, the look of derision when a normal person deigns to cycle through their midst on the way to the swimming pool, the barely concealed euphoria, the penchant for being photographed, the high pitched giggles. Some of this behaviour is understandable, as apart from Magicals entering the legal profession, this is the one and only time they can appear in public wearing their ‘gear’.
So once assembled on this day of a lifetime, what do the Magicals actually do? Well they stand around outside for a long time savouring their audacious freedom, then they go inside and sit around for a long time. Sound deadly boring? Well here comes the exciting part, one by one the magicals are called to the stage where they receive a scroll. Still sound boring? This is no ordinary scroll, this is a list of the most powerful spells The Magicals will ever use, and wrapped inside it is their magic wand.
You must be wondering how I know so much about The Magicals? Well I have a magic wand, its a little temperamental as are my powers but at times of extreme emotion I can make things happen.
