60 million deaths, over 2% of the world's population and some countries losing well over 5% of their entire populations.


Indeed, most people seem to remember the 11 million that were victims of the concentration camps. It's not common knowledge that a total of 60 million died because of that war. Sadly, I didn't know this until I played Call of Duty: World at War and they had stats like that listed at the end of the game. Oddly, that game gave me more of an appreciation of what those guys went through than any history lesson or movie did. The scale of it was enormous and while I was playing it I can remember thinking to myself, "how did anybody survive this?"

And there were a few 'free French' troops involved so technically it wasnt a foreign invasion. Although Its not clear if the French troops were involved in any action till the fighting was over
