you have to actually send them your passports and they stick a visa on a full page
the only things we paid extra for were firstly to cover for replacement passports if lost which cost £28 secure mail £17.94 all the rest is standard costs as far as i can make out

Ok, gotcha. You know 1st world country passport holders can avail of a 72 hour Shanghai entry without the need to get a visa. I'm pretty sure UK qualifies. I've used it (Australian passport). I will find the link and post it later. It's a transit visa so all you have to do is not fly back to the city you arrived from. Otherwise you're all good and it's free

Yes. Had to post off passports. Used the official China site to do it.... There were other sites offering the service, though to be fair to them, no where near as expensive as the price you quoted.
