so working it out from 2l/hr for 5kw, to 20kw is 8l/hr.
Works out about 39mpg

Hook that up for the long drives and park it somewhere when going into the city.

Joking aside, the added weight of 20kw generating capacity is going to decrease performance and increase power consumption, particularly in city driving. You would get away with smaller batteries though.

Damn, my 3.5 V6 gets 33mpg... looks like this idea is dead in the water, hence why none of the manufacturers have used such a configuration!

all you would need is a tow hitch to convert I normal EV to the plan.

My plan was to use this, I think it would just produce enough power

Today I spotted a Mitsubishi MiEV and as for the sound, it had as much tire and windage noise as any car and I didn't hear the electric motor, and many gasoline cars go by pretty quietly, so it didn't seem in any way different. But it had no tailpipe.
