I loved Oblivion but wasn't so keen on the Fallout series so can't wait for Friday

Pre-ordered, but haven't taken the day off like some I know.

Oblivion was a bit of a let-down for me after Morrowind, but Skyrim looks like it could be fantastic.

Oh...

We have people coming over this weekend so I've cleared as much work as possible with the aim of getting stuck in to Skyrim on Friday. I've gone for PC rather than console as I'm assuming it's going to be as buggy as Oblivion was and it would be nice to be able to download unofficial patches to fix the issues! I'm just praying my PC is good enough to be able to handle the game.

I am a big fan of fallout but was really upset with Bethesda that it took 3 months to release patches.

How is this pronounced? I got corrected by being told its Sky like the sky then rim. I called it skirim

So it arrived today, yay! But annoyingly, it tried to authenticate with Steam (I should have taken my PC off the network before I installed) and it won't let me install until tomorrow. Ergh.

bud - I've been pronouncing it as sky rather than ski?!

I didn't know much about the game when I was asked about it, I thought the word (like the game) looked like a Nordic or Saxon word so pronounced it as such.

So, aside from the UI and the fact that the default FOV is lame and console-y, I love it.

I'd already be playing the game but the only store in my county that carries video games is Walmart and they decided to stock 800 copies of Modern Warfare 3 and three copies of Skyrim, so they were out by the time I got there.

Been playing a ton. Pretty cool so far. I like what they've done with the streamlined interface. But I'm not sure how I feel about the simplified character creation. Also, unless I'm missing something, changing weapons and spells seems like much more of a chore than it used to be, even with the "favorites" list.

Hopefully there are, or will be, tweaks to help these.

So you missed out on the "amazing" pre-order map too...

I am loving this game. I'm not normally one who cares about graphics but I have stopped multiple times just to go "wow!". They are definitely a massive step up from Oblivion.

I have two gripes - I don't like the map; I'm finding it really hard to work out where I'm going and I do keep getting lost. Although that does mean I find loads of random places and therefore loads of side quests so it's not all bad. It also crashes a lot - mainly back to the desktop. Thank goodness for the Quicksave button I suppose being a Bethesda game, I shouldn't really have expected anything else though

What specializations is everyone picking? I started with a warrior specialising in one-handed weapons with a few magic spells but I've discovered sneak + bow is also pretty good. Now I'm wondering if I've picked the wrong initial perks

I've abandoned my usual choices (Dunmer spellsword and Khajiit assassin) and gone for a Nord, focusing mainly on combat. It's an interesting experience, I must say, using one-handed weapons, light armour and destruction magic. For once, just running in and hacking people to bits feels like a fun approach.

I haven't had that much crashing, maybe once or twice in i think about 20 hours. If you haven't already, definitely check for an updated video driver for your graphics card. I forgot the first day I played and was getting horrible framreate droppage in wide open areas (on high settings), and after I updated, it runs perfectly smoothly on ultra settings.

I'm a Dunmer "fire assassin". Sneaky, with skill in light armor, archery, single-handed blades, and fire destruction. So far I've been having trouble finding cool illusion spells like chameleon or invisibility, so haven't done much with that yet.
