brushed it close with 11 minor faults, thought this'd be a good thread to discuss our own learning to drive stories!

Congrats, it's a great feeling when you get to go out by yourself for the first time. Go find some quiet country roads and blast it!

My test stories seeing as you asked... first test i got 2 majors and 2 minors! :hehe: It was ridiculous, he made me pull over just after a blind bend, i go to pull away and this tool comes speeding round the bend... and i get failed cause he had to brake. Good one. 2nd major was for changing lanes apparently incorrently, i was never sure exactly why that warranted a major. Still, it's all moot now anyway. I remember being REALLY nervous before that first test though.

Second test i had no such nerves, i breezed it with only one minor for observation while reversing round a bend. I could see the instructor spending more or less the rest of the test picking at their nails. :-| That was a great day and a great relief to pass though.

When i was still learning i'd done the commute from Derby to central Nottingham (in rush hours) loads of times and i think that helped me a lot when it came to the test. Anyone who knows Nottingham can attest to the rush hour madness and some of the stupid road layouts you have to deal with...

Hey what a coincidence! So did I!

in 1983.

I got one error written in the report: Improper use of steering wheel. The guy didn't tell me about it while I was doing it, it just appeared on the paper afterward. I asked my driving teacher about it and he said everyone who uses his car for the test gets that. It's because it didn't have power steering. It was an 82 Rabbit.

There were cars back then? :hehe: Remember my dad had a 1982 Honda Civic.... the small roundish hatchback. Great car.

I learned to drive on a 1977 Datsun 1200 coupe. That car was unbreakable! I think its still running.

I remember my very first test, it was in 1998, 16 years old, dad's 1972 LTD.. this isn't THE car, but it's for a mental image of what I was dealing with.

I failed, I do remember that, but the part that stuck out the most was the dimmer switch was a knob on the floor, I had gotten all my practice in my friends 96 saturn and my pastors 97 buick lesabre. Both very nice cars for the time and nothing compared to the ol' LTD.

:rofl::rofl:

Oh you can rest assured I know exactly what a 72 LTD looks like!
And those floor mounted high beam switches were the norm for American cars then. Even into the 80s for some.

My British driving test was so long ago that I can't remember what happened; I know it wasn't perfect but I passed first time when I was 18; back in 1994, and I believe I took the test in my instructors 1.3L Vauxhall Corsa. My second driving test in the US was easy in comparison; it was literally a drive around the block and park again; and again I passed first time; I got one minor for doing 27mph in a 25mph zone.

I was thinking i wonder how our american cousins would fair in a manual on british roads!, i got 11 minors, twice as many as my first test, which i failed.

Congrats on passing.

I learned and did my tests in a prious:

First attempt - just before my first test I had a different instructor take me for a mock test and approaching a pedestrian crossing with steps leading to it so you can't see anyone at it, it changed so I stopped quite quickly before the line but not anything like an emergency stop, later he told me I'd have failed for that and should have carried on through. On my test, same crossing but other direction same thing happened but was even closer when it changed so I carried on through, even the examiner said I would've been halfway across it if I'd tried to stop but I should've still stopped. FAIL.

Second attempt - told by instructor always to use greenlanes if possible, on the test the greenlane approaching a roundabout I was allowed to use and did, exiting the roundabout I used the greenlane but that wasn't allowed, FAIL.

Third attempt - 2 minors, PASS. \o/
