It's simple Lew.
Lewis was faster than Rosberg for the majority of the race, he was pushing harder and got in front of the Redbull's however Merc had miscalculated the fuel probably and told him to go to damage limitation. Now, would you like to be penalized for listening to the team and giving chase (thus compromising your fuel strategy) since there was a potential win to be earned? Rosberg was not in attacking distance whereas Lewis was.
So Lewis makes his attack, and then it seems it can't be sustained...however he had outqualified his teammate and easily keeping him in check until the last pitstop. Let's not forget as well that Rosberg overtook him twice, and Lewis took the place back, TWICE. Mercedes hadn't made the call at this time as yet since these guys were racing. However, probably right after, the call did come in telling both cars to hold station and bring it home. The more I think about it, the more fair I think it was...since it is Mercedes' biggest haul of points since coming back to the sport, their lead driver had earned his 3rd place and was in trouble through no fault of his own, and the Redbulls were already miles away at this point and cruising.
If the situations were reversed, they should apply the same rules. Thankfully, Mercedes has 2 drivers with credibility and sportsmanship who know the team is bigger than the drivers...unlike what happened in the Bieber camp. Nico is a mature guy, and I hope he receives his rewards soon this season. He showed everyone how quick he is, not many people on the grid are able to keep up with Lewis in terms of race pace but Rosberg had no problems with it. Lewis made the difference in his outlaps though, they were stunning to say the least.
