A side thought... tires unlike everything else in modern cars actually kept standard measurement instead of going metric. Anyone know why was?

I always thought because of Americans

I bet the technicians and engineers don't use imperial units!

If you smoke a lot of pot, you may never become a rocket scientist.
Or maybe...
If you seen some of the things that happen lately to NASA, maybe you can.
The Mars Lander...
I did the calculations in feet,
but I programmed the Lander in meters.
So, instead of landing, duck buried!
million dollars... oopsy!
Two years... splat!

It may have something to do with women, because if it was up to men (7 inches or 18 centimeters as an example) you'd think we'd be using metric all the way!

Read this over on SPEED. Looks like whatever happens rims will remain 13 inches at least next year, not matter what tire decision is made. Too many fundamental of the design decisions in suspension and brakes and who know what else to change to 18 inch rims as Pirelli and Michelin want to do.

F1: Teams Designing 2011 Cars For Current Tires
A decision hasn't yet been made on which tire brand will succeed Bridgestone next season...

Because the decision about next year's supplier is taking so long, F1 teams are designing their 2011 cars around the current specification of Bridgestone tire.

The Japanese marque is departing the sport, and it had been expected that the Italian company Pirelli would be unveiled this weekend as successor. But Michelin has thrown a spanner in the works, sending competition boss Nick Shorrock to Istanbul, where a 90-minute meeting on Sunday resulted in the teams still not deciding on an outcome for next year's World Championship.

"It's going to take a little while longer," Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn told Reuters in Turkey.

But the teams' designers are out of time, and leading outfits are getting anxious.

"It's already late and we cannot really waste more time on it," said Ferrari's Stefano Domenicali.

Brawn said the teams are handling the situation by producing a "technical specification" of the tire they want for 2011, and are therefore able to continue with plans for next year's cars.

"Our cars are being designed around the current tires because we have no other information," he explained.

ESPNF1:
Michelin has all but ruled out the possibility of returning to Formula One as a tyre supplier in 2011 due to the shortage of time left to develop a tyre.

"The development time for 2011 seems very compromised now," managing partner Didier Miraton said at Le Mans. "It is probably too late for the deadlines of next year. We have intervened to help, modestly, but at the rate things are going, I'm pessimistic."

He added that his company had been put off by the lack of interest from the paddock to allow a tyre war.

"When there is only one manufacturer, there is no competition, no progress, no pleasure and the interest in the manufacturer is low," said Miraton.

The news means Pirelli has inched even closer to securing a deal for 2011. The firm's competition director Paul Hembery was in talks with the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) in Canada over the weekend, and contracts are believed to have been drawn up and signed with Bernie Ecclestone some days ago. The final hurdle is the signing off by the FIA's legal department.

Looks like it's official, Pirelli to be the sole supplier for the next 3 seasons.

Do you think they've already had a word with Ferrari about the design? :D
