One author I never got into when at school was Philip Pullman. I'm now making up for that. Currently two thirds of the way through Northern Lights. It won't take me long to finish.

Read the introduction of On Liberty by John Stewart Mill Junior, it's an essay so I read the introductory part of it, not the teaser or synopsis put in by the publisher. He was a British political philosopher, and the text is centred around the rights and interactions of the individual versus society, the entire essay (according to the introduction at least) is centered around the principle that

Individuals are free to do what they like so long as it does not harm others [paraphrased]. . . that mankind is better off for suffering others to make decisions he feels are poor, than to compel them to obey
.

I think it's a very significant and influential idea, you can compare it to the idea of the modern scientific method, a key factor is making your own decisions based on logic and reason, not simply going with what is conventional or generally socially accepted (group think).

It also provides a fundamental, consistent basis for legislation and governance.

It's available on-line as an E-book, but I probably won't be reading the rest until I can get my hands on a hard copy.

I prefer that chain of command idea of controlling citizens, it is the chain that DD hits us with until we do what our mistress' bidding.

Oh, that happens anyway on here, the chain is just for show, people think the stuff up and enact.

Just finished the third book in the fifty shades trilogy (Yep, not very proud of that, but I don't like leaving things unfinished). Ive decided my brain now needs some stimulation so Ive started Les miserable- Victor Hugo. Ive seen the musical twice and love it, high time I read the book.

Its predictable, unlikely and badly written. But you know when you're watching a film, and you know its crap but still watch it to the end, its a bit like that.

so is 50 shades as bad as people make out?

As long as you dont expect any thing to brain taxing and accept that it is pure escapism fantasy, its fine. I must admit I got sucked in with all the hype and wasted a few rainy afternoons reading it. Wont change my life but enjoyed it none the less

I liked 50 Shades of Gray, even if it made me want to be naughty.

Did it? I got bored after the umpteenth time she "exploded around him". Found myself skipping over it.
