Lewis maybe the youngest ever world championship but he did walk straight into arguably the best team in F1. Jenson didn't have that luxury, starting at under-performing Williams, then Renault followed by the disgrace that was BAR and later Honda, finally getting a decent championship challenger last year! I have to say I don't remember Mansell and Hill mania, maybe I am more exposed to it now with loads of F1 based websites, I tend not to read magazines/newspapers, even less now I live stateside! Given the results so far this season; I don't believe that Lewis will walk away with the championship, Jenson will be keeping him honest all the way to the end of the season! I do wonder how long McLaren will let the pair fight it out as the season closes-in especially if the Red Bull's are close!

Jens was hyped as well, and hill, and Mansell, all were hyped, thats what the media do. I imagine alonso is massively overhyped in Spain and Vettel is massively overhyped in germany. Media hype is irrelevant really, its what the drivers do on the track that matters, and lewis delivers. Jens has impresed this year but he's not in lewis' league, close but not there. He needs the car exactly right to perform, he's admitted that. he had the car excactly how he likes it in Chinea and Turkey, and lewis was faster, he's admitted that too. Can jens still win the championship? Yes of course he can. Is he likely to beat Lewis? Well I know where Id put my money. But if he wins......kudos to him.

Lewis has been hyped much more than Jenson, Damon and Nigel, I know you wont agree with that statement, but the three other Britons didn't/don't appear in the media half as much as Lewis Hamilton does. I'm really annoyed with the media going on like Jenson stands no chance of beating Lewis; this season has been of two phases so far; Jenson had the better of the first quarter of the season, and Lewis has had the better of the second quarter. I don't think there is much to split the two, to say that Jenson isn't in Lewis' league is ridiculous; all F1 drivers are in the same league; hence why they are F1 drivers, just that some have better equipment than others. Lewis and Jenson have the same car; but two completely different drivers in style; Lewis can wrestle a car into submission but Jenson has the silky smooth driving style that often pays dividends, some tracks with suit Lewis' aggression, other's will suit Jenson's smoothness. I am not going to call who will win the drivers title this year, it could be any one of four drivers, one thing I can guarantee is that the rivalry between Lewis and Jenson will hot up before the end of the season, we saw a little glimpse of that in Turkey with Jenson's overtake.

this season has been of two phases so far; Jenson had the better of the first quarter of the season, and Lewis has had the better of the second quarter

The first phase had 3 back to back rainy races where Jenson had won on 2 massive strategy calls (gambles), while Lewis was hard done by some bad calls from the McLaren team. It didn't take performance, he didn't perform better than Lewis in terms of driving. Having 3 straight wet races qualifies as an exceptional circumstance. It won't happen again, and even if it does, I wouldn't count on 6 straight fluke races for Jenson.

With the dry races, we see where the 2 drivers actually stand. I'm surprised by Jensons performance to be honest, he's done really well to just be 12 points behind Lewis. I've definitely underrated him. He is in Lewis' league, but not as good. This season has clearly demonstrated it time and time again, even in the races where Jenson finished ahead of Lewis.

Yes lewis was lucky in starting F1 in a fast McLaren, but he knew how to use it-he was against a double world champion. jens on the other hand was not so fortunate with his F1 start.

I think you hit the nail on the head about E-media. That was not around in anything like todays capacity during Mansell and Hill years.

I hope mclaren continue giving fairplay to both drivers until one can not feasibly win. I trust they will, they've bent over backwards to do so up to know. Im pretty sure neither of the macca boys would want to win with favours. Ok Jens may take points of Lewis but he's up their taking points off red bull as well-thats far more effective than what Heikki was doing...or not doing.

Lewis can get more out of it than Jenson. For whatever reason"

Lol, the reason is Lewis performs better in the car, that can only be the reason. I know it's hard to admit for some but it's the truth.

Anyway, we have plenty of races left and i will enjoy having this conversation at the end of the season.

Dear Mr. Jenson Button; the members of the Forumula1.com forum have decided that you are not good enough to beat your team mate, the fantastic, amazing world champion elect, Lewis Hamilton, just accept your position as number 2 driver for the McLaren Mercedes F1 team and be a good David Coulthard and support your team-mate...

..... I notice all over the Internets the Jenson fans are slowly retracting back into their turtle shells. They know what they are up against now.

(and the crushing has only just begun. )

It will be total demolition this weekend because this is a braking track. We got the new diffuser too, more downforce on the rear end will make the car more stable out of turns, but brake bias will have to change more to the back, fronts easier to lock now, unless mclaren put more on the front wing too. So Braking stability will be key as different speeds now call for different braking due to the nature of the diffuser. That should make it trickier for Button to drive, should keep him busy until the next upgrade. :)

Or maybe the new diffuser will play into Jenson's court, he thrives on a quick stable car... Everyone is convinced that Jenson will wither and disappear in Lewis' rear view mirror, Jenson is great at reading conditions, rain or other happenings, safety cars etc, some may say that his two wins were lucky; I say that he had the balls to take the gamble and it paid off; when Michael Schumacher was doing that, staying out on slicks when everyone else was pitting for inters, he was considered a driving genius, when Jenson does it; "oh, he was lucky" - give the man credit, he read the conditions well and benefited from it, also 4th place from 14th, hardly a poor performance. Don't count Jenson out just yet, I believe he can still come back at Lewis and challenge for the title.

As one of the few Jenson Button fans on here, there's no retracting into my shell (if I have one)... bring it on...

apparently Lewis crashed out of practice , now I don't like to judge on practice performance but some of you on here manage to make it really funny when Lewis makes a mistake.

HAHA! Jenson is in second place in the WCD points nipping at Lewis' heels as is... I don't think anyone especially Lewis is counting him out. The problem with the situation is that "reading conditions" and "consistency" are never as sexy as overtaking and making things happen. Jenson has proven that he's a better driver than most people gave him credit, and that he's one of a couple of drivers on the grid that can make up for raw talent with his analytical approach to racing.
