I am happy my brakes work today; three times in the space of about 200 metres; stupid people decided they were going to pull out from a parked position directly into my path despite having not having enough room to complete the manouvere safely and these are people with kids in the car, it makes me mad because I have my kids in the car!

Yes those idiots seem to forget about the safety of their 'precious cargo' and it pisses me off aswell.

Just as well I cruise along at 15mph in school zones, much to the annoyance of the people behind me... where kids are involved, I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Not to mention the HUGE FINES involved speeding through school zones  .

I'm aware of those fines; not that I have gotten one; the school zone speed limit is 20mph here in Kansas; I always travel at 15mph or less as I know my car can stop on a dime at 15mph just in case a kid runs out or an idiotic drivers decide to pull out directly in front of me... see I can go slower than the speed limit sometimes ;)

Kids are pretty resilient though, and I don't think they'd damage your car too badly if you were to hit one.

Where did you find "one of those modern, 10-lane wide boulevards" in edinburgh? There's nothing more than 4 lanes and most of those have 2 of them as bus lanes. They're even trying to squeeze a tram system in now.

Could be I'd been sampling the "local waters." When that happens, I sometimes have problems with my maths.

an econo-box came shooting out of a side street and turned right into the five oncoming lanes of traffic (of which I was one).

And you're complaining about some dopey tourist forgetting which side of the road to pull out onto!

Speaking of driving on the wrong side of the road! About six or seven years back in my home town of Plymouth, UK, bearing in mind Plymouth is a major gateway from Europe. There was a German driver that managed to drive for miles down the wrong side of the road until the police stopped them after getting off the car ferry. Going the wrong way around roundabouts; the wrong way down a dual carriageway, just as well the dual carriageway had a speed limit of 30mph being into the city centre. The driver thought nothing of cars coming towards him, just carried on ploughing his way down the wrong side of the road with cars swerving around him.

I've never been in the situation of having to drive on the other side to what I'm used to but I'd guess in some cases it could be an easy mistake to make, that is until you find yourself dodging oncoming traffic at which point it should become quite clear.

Being someone that had to make that transition, it can be hard some time; every now and again I have a freak out moment thinking I'm driving on the wrong side of the road!

a dual carriageway

You Brits are too funny :D

Yeah cause that is hilarious.

You'd never hear carriageway over here. Carriage? Reminds me of 1-2 horsepower. We call it highway here.

And what do highwaymen hold up?

The german autobahn (and their highways in general) is like a perfectly excecuting orchestra.
Driving in Switzerland is simply beautiful because of the mountain scenery... and the drive from Nice to Monaco is epic.

I've never had any problem driving in other countries from driving on the left/right... my dad used have some trouble when he went to Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and so on, as they were brit colonies and drive on the left. He decided to take taxis instead. I'm sure i'd hate driving manual gearbox on a brit-sided car... shifting with the left hand: yuck!

I find driving in the US is painfully slow.... one would assume slower = safer, but the german experience proves its not just like that........

The slower pace in the US compared to Germany is mainly due to the congestion and number of drivers imo. You are right though about higher speeds being a tad bit safer simply because a driver is more alert. When the speed limit was raised from 55mph to 65mph the number of accidents and casualties actually decreased and some roads now have a limit of 70mph which is even better.

yes.
but no, i dont mean slower pace because of traffic... rather because of what you mention about the speed limit. I find the US has VERY safe and large roads coupled with long travel distances, but an over-conservative speed limit... its nice that its been raised a bit, because 65 was still slow.

When the problem is traffic, i guess its the same for everyone everywhere...... there's just too much people hehe.
