I completely disagree with you: Esperanto is a still-born artificial language nobody considers seriously to learn over English. Not only that, it is elitist and discriminatory when you think about it: poor people will never have a chance to learn it, but they can easily pick up some English.
Esperanto is as dead as Latin and so it should remain. RIP.

and do suggest Esperanto is a good international language well try telling that to Asian or Arab speaking nations! its easy for Europeans speakers to pick up as they use the Roman alphabet or versions of.

and i think what makes a language international will be the language of big corporations and big business. atm English is the language to know in this case but Chinese would be a useful language to learn for the coming future especially if they do become the global economical power over the US

That's a very good point you're raising: Chinese. I think however, that the Chinese will have to adapt to English (and they do so anyway) because all their trading partners are already tracked for English, so I doubt they could and even wanted to start a new trend, especially since Chinese is a rather difficult language with its structure of different intonations that change the meaning of a word so completely. Besides their written language is not very computer friendly either

Well, the contest has come and gone, and met my (low) expectations. Brian Barker was right. The contestants should be made to sing in Esperanto. It is a planned language which belongs to no one country or group of states. Take a look at http://www.esperanto.net

Esperanto works and is very much alive. I've used it in speech and writing in a dozen countries over recent years.
Indeed, the language has some remarkable practical benefits. Personally, I've made friends around the world through Esperanto that I would never have been able to communicate with otherwise. And then there's the Pasporta Servo, which provides free lodging and local information to Esperanto-speaking travellers in over 90 countries. In the past year I have had guided tours of Berlin and Milan in the planned language. I have discussed philosophy with a Slovene poet, humour on television with a Bulgarian TV producer. I've discussed what life was like in East Berlin before the wall came down, how to cook perfect spaghetti, the advantages and disadvantages of monarchy, and so on. I recommend it, not just as an ideal but as a very practical way to overcome language barriers whern in another country.

I like you. :D

To all those who think English is so great and the future of International language. You are all deceived and foolish. To comments regarding China. As if they will adopt English. Here is a fact for you. English so popular only because of the USA. If China becomes a super power which is not an impossibilty then Chinese would also become a major language and could take over English. Harder it may be to write but all they have to so is simplify the writing system. Attuturk did this for the Turkush language which was once written using the much harder Arabic alphabet. Now it uses a Roman alphabet like Italian, English, French etc. English was nothing 50 or so years ago and will probably be nothing in another 50 or so years. This langauge thing changes with the times and cause of events. What one needs is universal language that is here to stay and easy to learn and most important neutral. Esperanto is by far the best candidate for that.

the Polish chick had a fake tan fake teeth and fake hair, and i think she could do with some fake breasts they were horrible!
not that many stood out for me not really my taste but Armania was kinda alright. I didnt see Russia's act they sung in English didnt they though?

Yes the Russian song was in English. Sad given that Russian is a language with a big amount of speakers and an offical language of the United Nations along side French, English, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese.

akr you have an obsession about languages  , but again you will never get a neutral language as the one you say should be adopted uses the roman alphabet, how is that fair for people who use asian or arabic languages?
and you say English is nothing well didnt you move to Australia purely to learn English? thats a big move for just liking a language

I like English and I choose to learn it by choice. I don't agree that it should be the universal language though and that people should learn it by force.

Just because China will become a superpower doesn't mean that we are all going to be speaking mandarin. English is the prominent language across the world because Britain once commanded an empire and spread the language to all corners. The USA was made up of native red Indians that spoke their own language before the British came killed them all. Although it will be useful to learn mandarin

It is not by force but by need to learn english in this day and age, English is the universal language of the world whether you like to admit it or not. take for example Kimi Raikkonen he doesnt speak Italian to the Italians at Ferrari, and they dont speak Finnish to him, they communicate in English. but your quest for a unbiased universal language like Esperanto is futle as the whole world does not use the Roman alphabet. i mean how would you feel if you needed to learn a universal language based on manderin?

This I seem to have taken out of context as my original argument about language was about making Esperanto the international language of Europe rather than the world. So in this case Europeans mainily speak languages that are either Romance(Latin Based), Slavic or Germanic which Esperanto is based on all 3 language groups. (2/3 Romance, 1/3 Germanic and syntax Slavic based but I have noticed some Slavic based words in the language). In the case of Europe Mandarin is irrlevent. I only mentioned China as the fact of a new soon to be boen super power and it is super powers that influence world dominance in language. In respect to Europe, English is an unacceptable universal language and with things like the French and their so called arrogance, even though I prefer English over French I agree with the French that English shouldn't be the language of Europe. (Neither should French however for the same reason).

In regards to Kimi, he is a donkey if he can't learn Italian. Massa speaks Italian and even Alonso who has never raced for an Italian team speaks Italian. I know this because I have seen a You Tube footage of the two arguing over an incident in I can't remember off hand which GP, and they were talking Italian. Either way with English being the universal language of Europe, you can say Esperanto is dead but the English attempt will never succeed. France will not support it and the other major countries like Germany and Italy will not accept it even if people like Italians appear to be obsessed with English as they like to add English words to the Italian langauge. And no Bud that isn't the reason why I learnt English either. Regarding Italians and putting English words in their language when there is already an existing word in Italian. I find it stupid and a "tryhard" type scenario. I very much usually ignore such speech and even act like I don't understand until the person I am speaking to changes the word to the correct Italian word.

What appears to be the trend is that the Slavic countries in Eastern Europe are learning English as a European International Communication. The major Western countries are not so the case as much as the East. Have found that many people in my native Slovenija can speak English. Oh well what do you expect, Slovenian and most Slavic languages are pissy little languages that are hard for foreigners to learn and only spoken by smaller groups of people. Go on the net and you'll always find things in Italian, German, French, English and Spanish. Too hard to find things in Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian, Slovak, Polish, Czech etc. So glad I grew up in Italy instead of Slovenija in this regards anyway. :)

Britain was jack compared to the USA of today. The USA has military bases for example in countries they do not rule. The have bases in countries of most of Europe and countries like Australia. They basically influence and indirectly tell these countries what to do and are not even part of them. Britain only ruled countries they colonised like Australia, India etc but had no control over other European countries like USA seems to have now. I can tell you right now that if in the USA the language were say German that German would hold the status that English holds globally today, thus the late Britsh Empire has very little impact on what English is the most popular global langauge today.

Might this have to do with the fact that FM speaks Portuguese (Brazilian) and FA speaks Spanish?

Duh!

English was spoken firstly by the British and wherever they went they took the language with them. At one point they controlled most of the world including the USA so when the Europeans emigrated they had to learn to speak English. Don't forget that the USA is mostly made up of whites whose families are from Europe originally.

Don't forget that in the USA a larger segment of whites traces their roots back to German rather than British origins. In fact, at one point they seriously considered to make German the official language - good thing they didn't follow through with that, can you imagine??

Well it is the 2009 one now. Anyone being watching it? I have. Some good songs and lots of shiit ones. I particuly cannot stand songs sung in English from countries that are not English speaking. If it isn't Britain, Ireland or Malta then I don't like it in English. Although nowadays I am finding a slow trend to groups starting to sing again in their own language. To the ones that don't, my message to you is that you suck. To Quarissimo of Slovenija. I love your Italian name but you all simply suck for singing in English. You could of followed in the footsteps of Alenka Gotar (2007) and Rebeka Dremelj (2008) who sang in Slovenian, but did not. Glad Quarissimo didn't make it past the semi final. Estonia's entry thus far I liked as well as those of Ireland, Croatia, Macedonia and Azerbijan. Lets see who wins the final tonight. :D
