Renault is now openly contemplating a return to full works status in formula one. After running a works team until 2010, the French carmaker remained on the grid only as a supplier, helping Red Bull to win multiple titles. But officials are now admitting a better marketing strategy for the future might be to once again buy into a team.

Alain Prost, an ambassador of Renault's F1 project, admitted: "A company like Renault is always analysing what is the best strategy, especially when you're considering a return of investment on something like formula one. But I cannot answer whether the time is right or not," the four time world champion, referring to the rumours Renault is thinking about buying a team, told the Spanish daily Marca.

Indeed, Renault's F1 chief Cyril Abiteboul insists there have been no decisions made about a change of strategy for the marque. "We are pleased to be engine supplier," he told RMC Sport. "Our priority is to make Red Bull world champion again."

However, Red Bull appears unhappy with the direction of Renault's turbo V6 project while the carmaker itself is concerned the energy drink maker attracts the majority of the marketing visibility. "Taking over a team is not excluded," Abiteboul admitted, "but it's not decided either."

"This must be a part of a long term strategy," he added. "We must think about the sporting strategy that works best for Renault. We will be attentive to everything, including the development of the sport and its finances," said Abiteboul.

I wonder how he would react if he lost 9 years rather than 20

I wonder what he will think when he fires up that turbo for the first time, "my kart motor is louder than this!".

Something we have not really talked about in here yet, will Alonso be the same driver? We all know that Felipe Massa was not the same driver after his head injury.

Did anyone read the rumour about their being an electrical problem with the turbo or something and the drivers wanted to hear more about the crash before Australia? Like Alonso got shocked or something?

FM has been a daddy since soon after his accident, so that could well play into it...

OK, I didn't know that, then again I wouldn't as I have zero interest in the drivers private life.

Yeah, I think Sagi posted something earlier in this thread?

Some info -

' Energy dip slows pace of brain:

Most immediate damage from concussions is hard to detect using standard imaging procedures, such as CT scans or MRIs. As a result, scientists have spent the better part of a decade studying animals, predominately rodents, for clues about the changes that take place in the brain.

When you slam your head, the force rapidly pushes the brain against the interior of the skull. This sudden movement causes brain cells to stretch and tear, altering the electrical and chemical balance critical to cell function and communication. These cells then spring into action, working harder to return to the correct chemical state. This puts the cell in a “highly stressful” state, leaving it unable to function properly or even survive.

“At the end of the day, a concussion is caused by an energy crisis to brain cells,” says Michael Collins, a clinical psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who specializes in sports-related concussions. “The brain must work much harder to perform tasks.”

Rapid stretching from concussions also causes axons — the long fibers that brain cells use to communicate with one another — to swell, compromising the ability of the cells to send signals. Too much swelling and the connections between cells can be permanently lost.'

I believe the combination of the two changed him, psychologically more than some Ferrari fans wanted to admit!!

I think Massa was out (in terms of not racing) for longer (assuming of course Alonso only misses the first race)?

I think Massa got hurt in mid-July and then missed the rest of the season, right?

edit: Google is a wonderful thing:
accident date was 25 July 2009, Q2;
son was born December 1st, 2009;
returned to F1 in 2010.

He had the equivelant of being shot in the helmet though, not belittling Alonsos case as there isn't much info but concussion can occur with far less than what Massa experienced and with a lot less damage.

You're absolutely right, Stone!! The two accidents are really NOT comparable!!
I was referring more to the two major events that year and the psychological
impact they must have had on his life.

Just to clarify: I'm a people-person, so when Massa had that horrible accident and
we were shown how far along in her pregnancy his wife was, I couldn't imagine the
trauma/fear/anxiety she must have felt seeing him in his hospital bed, especially
because of the uncertainty of the initial prognosis.

I can't imagine how she felt when he got back into the car in 2010.

Do I think this changed him? Absolutely! Who wouldn't be affected?

edit: meant to say the accidents weren't comparable.
Note to self: don't post when in a hurry!!

Lewis Hamilton is closing in on a new Mercedes contract, revealing they are "very much in the last stages" of signing it off.

The double World Champion, who claimed his first title with Mercedes last season, is out of contract at the end of this year.

He has, however, been in negotiations with the team for several months with both determined to continue the relationship.

Handling the talks himself, Hamilton has revealed they are now close to signing a new contract.

"It's been an experience. Learning something new and experiencing something like this, I'm glad I've done it," he explained.

"It's a very, very nerve-wracking kind of experience, but I just tried to do the best job I possibly could.

"Hopefully we're in the final stages. I don't really know what the timeline is. We're not rushing, but we're very much in the last stages of it."

Questioned as to whether entering the new season without a new contract in place would be a distraction, Hamilton said: "I don't think it makes a difference, not in terms of my preparations.

"It might for the team, although I don't think so. We're committed for this year anyway, contractually, so it would just be one less thing to think about."

The reigning World Champion was also asked about a report that he was asking for £1m per week from Mercedes. A story he denied.

"It's rubbish. It's just not true," he said.
