What do they win from it? Its a measure of pace

You miss the point. Do Autosport hand out a prize or anything like that? I doubt it. The FIA hand out prizes, F1 teams hand out bonuses to drivers.

I don't think any driver is going to get excited about what is written in some motorsport magazine.

I think you miss the point. This isnt about prizes its about relative skills of teammates/teams/drivers. And it isnt a 'written report' made up by a journalist, its a virtual grid in pictorial form showing pace over the races so far and updated each race. Its based on statistics not just made up.

No I don't miss the point at all. What is the significance in real terms to teams and drivers? None. It's just a nice little graphic and some numbers for us lot to read.

I've tried to google this virtual grid, but can't find anything on it apart from winter testing. Does anyone happen to know how it's derived?

Without having seen the virtual grid, I can't comment on it directly. But just because something is "based on statistics" does not make it completely accurate, representative of the whole population, or unbiased.

In other words, some journalist sat in an office somewhere and chose which numbers to add up, which numbers to give more weight to, and how to graphically represent the results. That's a lot of subjectivity added to the raw data.

Thats not how it works. Its updatd after every race and it works by taking each driver's percentage deficit to the outright pace over the season, using each driver's best laps from each grandprix weekend. the theoretocal absolute pace is expressed as 100per cent. So vettel who heads the grid is on 100.029, close to the absolute. While at the back of the grid is Karthikeyan on 108.590.
It shows lots of interesting things. If anyones intereseted I can start another thread and put in all the drivers with their percentage deficits. I personally need to see the picture of the grid to see where the gaps are bigger/smaller, but im sure some of you are better at visualising than I am.
I dont want to go on about iton here anymore because its hijacking the Kimi to Williams thread.

No. the supergrid in autosport. Updated after every race. Why is it biased acosmichippo?
#281305
At the very least, it benefits drivers who are more aggressive. Instead of being penalized with zero points if they crash while trying an overtake or pushing the car (or tires) past its limits, they still get to use their last quick lap. Granted, that last lap won't ever be as quick as one they could have done later in the race (due to fuel), but it's still better than a zero.

Yes it negates DNF's and crashes etc. Because its trying to show utimate pace. The same is applied to every driver.

Heres a link to an older grid. http://www.exacteditions.com/exact/brow ... /9475/2/18
Its not that different to the one Im looking at

Negates a hell of a lot of factors that dictate good driving through a race weekend though.

It doesnt claim to measure good driving. It measures pace.

Barrichello has had a great career. He had championship winning cars, won races, and lived the dream for 17 years. He can't complain if he is stood down.

We know that Kimi is world champion fast... He's young enough. I believe he is a better long term bet in Williams' eyes. There may be commercial advantages in having Kimi come on-board too.

Williams would a good fit for him. It shown in the past they don't need a PR perfect driver, they just want a quick, and motivated RACER. I think his trials in WRC have matured him somewhat, and revitalised him to wanting to do what he does best, wring the neck of an F1 car.

I think that motivation is what was wrong with his demise at Ferrari. Time will tell if he has the lust back.
