If RedBull use it at Silverstone then you can label it cheating. At the moment it's just another clever idea that the FIA decided it didn't agree with.

Certainly it will be stopped from Silverstone :-) and I think that's fair enough. Was it cheating? Well, it is being banned under the same rules that existed when they were using it.

Knowing what we know now, do you think it would have been better if the FiA had acted before the start of the season on it?

They didn't know at the start of the season how quickly Red Bull were going to walk away with the title :hehe:

Regardless of the motives of the rule change, I just hope that it does make a difference; having a more even playing field; I don't want another half decade of German dominance; last year was so great because it was a five way battle almost to the end of the season; this years is looking very reminiscent of the Schumacher dominance between 2000 and 2004.

...or maybe more like JB in 2009?

If it is indeed against the rules then I agree w/ the FIA's decision...The only thing that irks me is the fact that they made the decision in the middle of the season. IMO, their decision makes it look like they're trying to manipulate the results of the next races.

For Vettel to claim one more victory to claim his sixth win of the season and not win again for the rest of the season? that would be nice; give everyone else a chance!

Actually, if you go back to 2009 you see that JB won 5 of the 7 first races - that's it, no more wins after Turkey. SV currently has 5 wins from the first 7 races

I don't believe the FIA fully understood the extent of the possible aero rules violation until recently. Is the pole position or race win the results of the driver or a computer nerd proficient in engine mapping software code. I think the FIA made correct decision, but not acting before season's end would have been far worse.

^^ So we can boil this all down to the FIA choosing to appear hypocritical instead of incompetent? :D

I don't think the men who run the FIA themselves are stupid (apart from the one senile old fool), which begs the question, what is it about the inner workings of the organisation they have created condemns them to always making such irrational decisions?

We none of us knows what makes the RB7 so quick. I doubt anyone who's cheque isn't signed by Christian Horner knows the truth of it. But I do know Adrian Newey hasn't reached this level of success by failing to have a backup plan. Whether it's a hinged tea tray or a flexy front wing or a kneeling front suspension, he knows that in the FIA's current political climate, any radical innovation that proves successful runs the chance of being regulated into the dustbin.

Newey has a backup. RBR have bet €6 million on it.

I completely agree, but €6 million or not, you don't lead with your back up plan for a reason. Let's see how the remainder of the season unfolds.

That's how long it took the other teams to catch on to -- and catch up with -- the Brawn's Toyota-developed shadow diffuser. Vettel won at China because the heavy rain neutralised the DD's advantage and the RB5's chassis shone.

The FIA are basically manipulating the results, it was apparent from the very first race of the season that the EBD (Exhaust Blown Diffuser) system was an clear infringement of the rules, Charlie Whiting acknowledged that; why did they not say your cars are illegal infringing article x.xx and remove the cars running the EBD system from the classifications for Australia instead of allowing the few teams to get away with it for eight races and now that others are developing a similar system and the playing field is starting to level out, suddenly the EBD system is being banned.

It didn't suit them then.

- also, its not EBD's that are banned, in fact EBDs will stay for the rest of the year and rules will be changed for next year to ban them - it is engine overrun that is being acted upon not EBDs :)

Helmut Marko's take on the overrun ban.

Marko questions timing of blown exhaust clampdown

Saturday 18 June at 12:01 : Jun.18 (GMM)

Dr Helmut Marko has questioned the timing of the FIA's blown exhaust clampdown.

Charlie Whiting told the teams in London on Thursday that restrictions on the sophisticated off-throttle systems will apply as of Silverstone in July, ahead of a total ban in 2012.

Some commentators have seen the mid-season ban as an attempt to curb the dominance of Sebastian Vettel, whose Red Bull team pioneered the current technology.

"Inventions such as the double diffuser and the F-duct were both banned at the end of the year," Marko, Red Bull's motor racing consultant, told German Bild-Zeitung newspaper.

"Now we see a ban in the middle of the season. That's pretty strange.

"What we hope now is that it doesn't hit us any harder than it does Renault, Mercedes and McLaren, while Ferrari is most certainly looking to gain an advantage," claimed Marko.
