Can we include Jim Clark, Ayrton Senna, Larry Csonka and Earl Campbell into the mix?

I thought you can include anyone you want providing you can back it up, but apparently theres a few forumners with sticky posters of MJ that wont accept otherwise :D

Yeah like you did with  Beckham
Seriously Beckham?

Tex watcha think of Jim Thorpe? bit before my time

What did Jordan do that Beckham didnt?

Ask Karl Malone,Charles Barkley,Patrick Ewing etc.
:wavey:

Im asking you. Speak up.

OK kiddo.I'll give you the simplest answer. Jordan was simply the best player on the court at all times, weather as Spice Boy wasnt even the best on his team

David Beckham,

won countless titles with man united, played for real madrid, ac milan, three of the top 5/6 clubs in europe.

made his name a company, famous where football isnt even watched.

Heck no, I don't even have to dig deep to come up with a better player, Zidane?

Gary Neville probably has the same or greater number of premiership titles as David Beckham, my point mainly being your greatly helped in football by the quality of those around you. Same applies to Beckham, good enough to play for Man United sure, but greatly helped out by his team.

Beckham's good at passing and set pieces, but wasn't creative, a good dribbler or tackler.

Zidene's won far more individual awards then Beckham as well.

I said it as a slightly patronising example of people who are picking people who are purely masters at their respective sport, i dotn think Beckham comes close. But neither does Michael Jordan IMO. Im amazed most people on here think hes the best ever!

Have you even seen Jordan play??WTF
Jordan was a MONSTER on court,he hated to lose.............. on anything,he HAD TO WIN, he once kept one of his friend playing pool for 18 hours until he won.He wouldn't let his dad win a stupid card game. People like MJ are born every 500 years.
Not only MJ was the BEST scorer in the NBA,but he was one of the best defenders as well. I have never witnessed a better athlete ever.

I have to agree that Jordan was the best baller I've seen play. I had an opportunity to see the Bulls play the Nets back in the late 90's, I was given court side tickets, it was Brendan Byrne Arena back then. Jordan, Pippen, Rodman. The guy was magical to see live what he could do. The thing that amazed me the most was the awareness he had of time and space as he jumped. You just can't get a sense of the distance traveled in the air when watching it on tv. The best of his generation, perhaps the best ever.

Greatest Athletes ever:

Muhammed Ali

Lance Armstrong - probably my picks with Ali

Michael Schumacher

Why? All three revolutionized the sport, and stood head and shoulders aboe their contemporaries.

One is a cultural icon/hero for his politics and racial ideas.

One is a 7 time winner of the most gruelling trial of mans physical testimony ever created. Battled Cancer, won, and returned to cycling.

One revolutionised Formula One, dominated it, and has sinceforth donated millions to charity in good faith.

For an extra added bonus all three competed in sports in which sportspeople from the world entire and every continent took part in, and knew of, they were the best in the world, the world that was actually competing mind, rather then just the US within itself.

Lance is a one trick pony, a great pony, but a one trick pony. You may never have even heard of Eddie Merkx, but that was the guy. He didn't need a specialized team around him, he didn't race only one race, he won everything there was to win. The guy was the Michal Jordan of cycling. :D

About your Jim Thorpe question to Tex before... Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania is not too far from me. He was born there, and they renamed the town after him, the guy was an all around athlete, gifted in every sport he tried, voted best athlete of the first half of the 20th century, Ali got the second half.

The UFC guys are some tough athletes but i would not call them the best athletes in the world ( GSP maybe )

Lebron has never won a championship but is still know as one of the greatest players to ever step on the court

Ive heard and seen of Mercx, but id be a hypocrite if i picked him wouldnt i WB?

My picks are based on what they did outside of their sport, Lance still won 7 titles. Whilst fighting Cancer, and beating it.

Michael is a great humanitarian and revolutionised F1, and Ali....doesnt need me to say what he did.

Why you wont include footballers? Its common practice to expand on statements you make when debating a given subject.

Ok.
Assessing footballers of NOW is tricky.Everyone says Messi is the mesiah.......I DISAGREE,he's great, but he's also shining because of Barcas tactical game which includes half of Spain's national team.
Now in the World Cup he was average and didn't even score a measly goal.So where did his greatness go?

Zidane on the other hand is a good example of how the National team was great with him and DIED when he left.

I said I wont include footballers because I'm a tough critic and don't assess players like most experts.

Michael Jordan is the apex of an athlete. He was the team drive, the skill to win, the will to win, at all costs. I was able to watch him play from 93 until he retired the 2nd time. He is the Ayton Senna and Michael Schumacher (if you could combine them) of Basketball. I do not foresee us seeing anyone remotely close to him ever again.

Some may disagree but just look at any old top lists on the net and any espn special. He's wins pretty much all of them.
