I expect FIA to declare whatever innovation Maca has illegal if they're successful in OZ

And that's what's wrong with F1 lately. Stifling innovation, one team at a time.

Looks to me like it can be classed as body work. the inlet to the octo box is actually the end point to the exhaust outlet, so the exhaust outlet is where the box begins thus any ruling on the exhaust is before the box and therefore this is legal.

Why didn't they run it in testing?

My opinion? The rules say only one exit per engine bank is allowed. I can't see how a team could go and claim such a system is just car bodywork when it's role is to channel gases from the engine, the very definition of what an exhaust does! Secondly if it's made of illegal materials, that's a pretty open and shut case.

All that said, this is all still internet rumour at the moment, so we'll see if ANY of it is actually true come next weekend ( :D ).

Gotta hand it to Ted Kravitz who said to expect exhaust controversy before testing even started...

Well where does an exhaust end? where the gas reaches the air? If the gas touches bodywork then technically it hasnt reached its end and said bodywork is apart of the exhaust system right? then blown diffusers are illegal.

The difference is, they've only got 2 exits... do you see what i mean?

According to Sam Michael (Williams) "Any ducting that is used to "pipe" hot exhaust gas through the car is classified as exhaust" and has to be made from one of the prescribed materials. Pyrosic (which the O-box is made of) isn't one of those materials.

But of course you'd expect an opposition team to take a contrary view.

I wonder if McLaren has already run this past Charlie Whiting?

It might explain why they were trying out different exhaust configs if they had indeed turned up with the system and Whiting had said it's illegal...

Scarbs is now tweeting:

It's been confirmed that anything that routes exhaust gas is the exhaust. Thus only 2 exits and no pyrosic.

and:

no I expect they will have the conventional rear exit pipes

I'm still waiting for more/any 'official' news on this though...

Anyone have the rulebook handy? If that's what it says this is open and shut.

FIA F1 Tech Regulation

3.8.5 Once the relevant bodywork surfaces are defined in accordance with Article 3.8.4, apertures, any of which
may adjoin or overlap each other, may be added for the following purposes only :
- single apertures either side of the car centre line for the purpose of exhaust exits. These apertures
may have a combined area of no more than 50,000mm2
when projected onto the surface itself. No
point on an aperture may be more than 350mm from any other point on the aperture.
- apertures either side of the car centre line for the purpose of allowing suspension members and
driveshafts to protrude through the bodywork. No such aperture may have an area greater than
12,000 mm2
when projected onto the surface itself. No point on an aperture may be more than
200mm from any other point on the aperture.

5.6 Exhaust systems :
Engine exhaust systems may incorporate no more than two exits.

Then what about Ferraris starter hole that routes exhaust gas?:confused:

What if the octopus is detached from the pipe exit by even half a mm? what then?

Maca will always get the stick from a corrupt FIA,it's nothing new. While other teams' loopholes are turned a blind eye FIA makes their special rulebook for Maca
