Well there are 3 options. All you need to do is pick which one you think is true:

Number One:

Lewis: So why are we going to the Stewards?
Dave: To see about that that incident with Trulli. He overtook you under the safety car.
Lewis: Ah but you told me let him by over the radio.
Dave: Yes but I've been told my Martin and Co that we need to maximise our finish. So we'll just tell the Stewards we said nothing of the sorts ok?
Lewis: Ok.

Number Two:

Lewis: So why are we going to the Stewards?
Dave: To see about that that incident with Trulli. He overtook you under the safety car.
Lewis: Ah but you told me let him by over the radio.
Dave: Yes. but we could well be in for third place here Lewis. We need to screw over the FIA. Call it revenge for Spa. So we'll just tell the Stewards we said nothing of the sorts ok?
Lewis: Ok.

Number Three:

Dave: So we'll go and find out about Trulli then Lewis?
Ant (butting in): Yes let's just say he over took me and I never slowed down.
Lewis: But Daddy?
Ant: No Buts Lewis, we must take Third - Think of the Money!
Dave: But you just told the press...
Ant: Ah who cares about them, the Press are stupid. They love us, they'll not suspect a thing.
Lewis: Yeah we'll do that.

Some people seem to be basing their views on the story that Hamilton was 'mislead'. Anybody who doesn't think that sounds slightly suspicious needs a reality check.

Well what do you think Happened? like i've said i'm not sure but i can understand him being pressured into it, if that was the case

Hamilton's shown throughout his racing career he is extremely competative and will do anything to get the best result for himself. On top of that, he's a grown, mature man. I really do not find it convincing, therefore, that Hamilton was 'mislead' like a lamb by Ryan. Although it's only my opinion and not a proven fact, it seems more likely that this plan was concocted by the two of them somehow, borne out of frustration with the unclear regulations, botched communication between the pitwall and Hamilton and the inability to get in touch with race control. After the scandal emerged, McLaren stuck to their usual policy of protecting their drivers no matter what and took the blame on themselves. The team had to be seen to be taking the matter seriously by the FIA, so Ryan was singled out as the instigator of the lie.

A grown mature man?? He's 24 years old!! I feel desperately sorry for Ryan here and dont believe he thought it through , he was trying to right a wrong that was partly his fault. But he was he employer here and by way the most experienced. Lewis should have stood up to him and he sure as hell knows that now. Are you suggestuing this was Lewis' idea?? Why did he tell one thing to the press and then change it? If he had decided to lie on his own he would have done so from the outset. His mistake was in not standing up for his convictions.

You have to accept it was moronic. It doesn't matter what pressure Dave put on him (And let's be clear, Dave is probably just a scapegoat for the team as a whole or Lewis himself) Lewis knew what he had said. Someone who nominally outranks him saying "Do this" doesn't lose him the human abilities of thought and speech. He's either a moronic cheater or a complete idiot. There is no explanation which paints him favorably.

Can you honestly say given the same situation you would of not even slightly scumbed to the pressure?

have you ever been in a situation like that?

Hamilton is not a child. Do me a favour. I'm not suggesting it was necessarily Hamilton's idea, but what I am saying is that it was more fifty-fifty. Let's say Ryan suggested the idea, I'm pretty confident Hamilton would have willingly and knowingly gone along with it.

Not only that, when the team was under the microscope after the spy scandal and when Ecclestone and the FIA are not your best friends, you don't provide them with the ammunition they need to shoot you! :hammer:

:yes::banghead::yes:

Come to think of it, only several days before the Australian Grand Prix, Ron Dennis was threatening that the teams would go on strike, so McLaren couldn't have chosen a worse time to screw up.

The more information that's become available and the more I've thought about this over the past day or so, it really has seemed all the more farcical. Until Mosley and Ecclestone - plus their allies - are gone from Formula One, McLaren has to do everything possible to keep its nose clean. Learn the regulations off by heart. If there are any uncertainties, ask the FIA for clarification. Keep a tighter control on what is said to the media etc.

What about Option Number 4!

Dave: So we'll go and find out about Trulli then Lewis?
Lewis:Yes and we'll tell them there was no talk you telling me to let him by
Dave:But you said to the media?
Lewis:Relex! it was speed TV people will just think the yanks got confused.
Dave:I don't think this is a good iea
Lewis:I am World Champion do as i say.
Dave:Ok

need a poll on this

I'm not the F1 World Champion and a massive asset to my employer. So if I, as I am now, was in that situation, I have no idea. If I was, then no, I would not have succumbed to that pressure, even though I'm sure it was absolutely massive compared to a down to the last lap fight for the World Championship

I've been told to lie by superiors before though. I refused.

PS: It's somewhere between 4/3 and 1 I reckon.

I don't think it is any of those. If Whitmarsh and the rest of the team were aware of the plan, McLaren would probably not have gone around letting Hamilton shoot his mouth in impromptu television interviews for starters. It seems most plausible with the information available that it was both Ryan and Hamilton's idea, and Hamilton was certainly not as naive as his devotees like to think. Revenge for Spa may have been part of it, but the incident in its own right was more than adequate.

I know that. He knows that and regrets it bitterly. Have you never been asked by your boss to do something that your not comfortable with???? Its not a nice feeling.

Ok so we have a number Five then? :P

Lewis: I want my Third Place
Dave: I want your Third Place
Lewis: We'll just not mention the part about me slowing down to let The Trulli Train Pass?
Dave: You got it Lewis, make sure your Kers is fully charged. Oh wait s***.

He's putting forward a number of situations. Your comment basically dismantles your own argument, because you've been preaching to the world Hamilton was easily led and is truly repentant, but you weren't present to make this claim either.
