Discuss the sport you love with other motorsport fans

Transcending the sport?? RC are you sure you want to excite a certain segment of the membership again, the last time we had pages and pages of twitter and facebook and tears and sorrow and thread locks just because of a similar innocuous comment - that Lewis was bigger than an F1 team

Oh well maybe its ok to discuss this now as its in the mainstream media :hehe:

I had a very recent (similar) experience with that as well...just not on the public forum. :hehe:

RC, you're treading dangerous ground.

You guys are sounding scary now :woohoo:

But on the subject of transcending the sport...Merc aren't stupid and must be able to see the popularity and general interest surrounding Hamilton. He is a marketing dream and if any driver is to be dropped from the team ( I don't actually think they will) it surely won't be Lewis.

Looks like Lewis is getting quite a bit of support from the future BBC/Sky Commentator:

Button: Hamilton one of the fastest ever

Jenson Button believes Lewis Hamilton is one of the fastest drivers in F1 history and says he is impressed with the mental strength his former McLaren team-mate has shown this year.

Button and Hamilton were team-mates between 2010 and 2012 at McLaren, during which time they recorded 18 wins together. Although their partnership was not without controversy, with Hamilton colliding with his team-mate at Montreal in 2011 and tweeting confidential telemetry information in 2012, Button says he has fond memories of their time together and holds his compatriot in the highest regard.

"He's one of the fastest to ever jump into a Formula One car," Button said. "His natural ability is probably better than anyone in terms of outright speed. But we all know Formula One is not all about natural ability, it's about how you build on your natural ability and also how your engineering skills are and how you work with hundreds of people within a team to develop a car.

"I think he's good [at that] and when we were team-mates we had a lot of fun racing together. Some of it was controversial, but not a lot of the time."

Hamilton's mental strength was called into question earlier this year after his reaction to Nico Rosberg's mistake in qualifying, which meant he had to abort a lap he thought would earn him pole. But Button thinks Hamilton has shown greater maturity this year than he ever did during the pair's time together at McLaren.

"For me, watching him on TV and speaking to him he seems very comfortable in himself which is not the Lewis I knew when we were team-mates. He seems to be taking it on the chin, with the problems he's had I think he comes across really well.

"I don't know if it's just a front or if it is that he feels confident inside that he can still come back after these problems and fight for the world championship, but I really think he can."

Basically trying to say "You remember that year I 'beat' him on points...? Yeah I'm that good." :hehe:

I was in Montreal in 2011. I distinctly remember Button banging into him, not the other way around.

In any case, I think Button is taking the high road which is appropriate if he's planning on a post F1 career in broadcasting I think he'd be a lot better in how he calls what he sees than say DC. One day Jenson will be able to say... In 2011 I beat the winningest British F1 driver of all time!

Every week leading in to a Grand Prix weekend, Seems Jenson is always saying how good Lewis is, how fast, how unlucky, should be smashing Nico in the WDC, and what not. I think by Abu Dhabi, JB could possibly turn for Lewis with the way things are going. If i were Jessica Michibata, I'd be worried.

Maybe Jens is missing Martin a lot? :D

This one is for you RC.
Asked if he could personally profit from the change compared to Rosberg, Hamilton said: “I hope so. I remember way back from when we were in karts, the cool thing in karting [is] you don’t have any data – or we didn’t back then. So no one could ever see where I was quick.

“Maybe that’s a little bit more of a step in that direction because now you have so much data you can see everything, everything I do, any trick that I have. Every driver in every team will see that from his team-mate, but hopefully this is one step in that [other] direction.

 oh yes! Oh yes!! :cloud9::cloud9:

I guess the team can still tell Nico when he's back in the pits( after practise and quali sessions) but as Lewis says, it's a step in the right direction.

That's such a slap in Rosbergs face....he's basically saying "finally I get to keep my tricks and I have nothing to learn from the other guy". :hehe:

This sounds like Lewis wrote the lyrics. Maybe it could be the end of season Nico/Lewis make up song. :hehe:
