Yamamoto replaces Chandhok at HRT

By Pablo Elizalde Friday, July 16th 2010, 16:33 GMT

Karun Chandhok will not be racing at the German Grand Prix next weekend, his HRT team announced on Friday, and his place will be taken by Sakon Yamamoto.

The Japanese driver had replaced Bruno Senna for unknown reasons in the previous race at Silverstone, and the Brazilian will be back in action next week at Hockenheim.

Chandhok, however, will not be racing in Germany, the team said.

Hispania said that the Indian was still part of the team and that he was "likely" to be in the car later in the season.

"After Sakon Yamamoto gave a very positive performance in Silverstone, the team has decided to give the Japanese driver another opportunity to drive the car alongside Bruno Senna," said the team in a statement.

"Karun Chandhok is still part of the Hispania Racing, HRT F1 Team family and is likely to be in the car at some later races this season."

Yamamoto raced alongside Chandhok at the British Grand Prix, where the Japanese driver finished in 20th position behind the Indian.

I think Collin Kolles is that kind of guy that see someone laughing and says:

I thought there was a part of the rules that said you could only chnage your drivers so often!?!

From the teams point of view it keeps the drivers on their toes, as the team has now shown that they will drop you at will.

CHANGES OF DRIVER

a) During a season each team will be permitted to use four drivers. Changes may be made at any time
before the start of the qualifying practice session provided any change proposed after 16.00 on the
day of scrutineering receives the consent of the stewards.

  • Additional changes for reasons of force majeure will be considered separately.
  • Any new driver may score points in the Championship.
b) In addition to the above each team will be permitted to run additional drivers during P1 and P2 provided :

  • the stewards are informed which cars and drivers each team intends to use in each session before the end of initial scrutineering, changes after this time may only be made with the consent of the stewards ;
  • no more than two drivers are used in any one session ;
  • they carry the race number of the nominated driver they replace ;
  • they use the engine and tyres which are allocated to the nominated driver ;
  • they are in possession of a Super Licence.
c) If one of the team’s nominated drivers is unable to drive at some stage after the end of initial
scrutineering, and the stewards consent to a change of driver, the replacement driver must use the
engine, gearbox and tyres which were allocated to the original driver (see Articles 25.3 and 28.4).

I thought like you that only one driver change was allowed per season... but technically as Yamamoto has already driven for the team it *may* still be within the rules!

I remembered it being, number 1 driver could change once and number 2 driver twice.

I suppose it must of been re written to allow friday testing etc

When it comes to FIA rules, I am in the dark most of the time as it's constantly changing, I was going to say "evolving" but that really is the wrong word! :rolleyes:
