but its considerably more than brawn, besides, mclaren is likely to have the better car, for one year, then i thnink merc may overtake

I don't think that it was a financial issue. We understand that our offer to Jenson may well have been in excess of what he might be getting with McLaren. I don't think that it was a financial issue whatsoever.

"I want to make clear that Jenson's decision to join us was in no way motivated by money. We'll be paying him no more than he could be getting elsewhere and that fact is a reflection of, not only Jenson's belief in Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, but also his desire and ambition to build on the phenomenal results he achieved during the 2009 season."

Jenson has made some bad choices in the past and because of that I'm a little worried he has gone and done it again. My main concern is that he has left the "king" Ross Brawn behind.

However.....

Mclaren are a world class team and it is a massive new challenge for him, especially to be up against Hamilton. If he can beat him at his own team then Jenson will truly be classed as a GREAT driver and not just a good one.
So Jenson has set himself up for a huge challenge and at least know one can say he just stayed in a safe and easy seat, he's put himself right out there and I look forward to seeing how the next season unfolds.

Button confident of challenging Hamilton

Wednesday, November 18th 2009, 14:16 GMT

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson ButtonJenson Button has no fears about going up against Lewis Hamilton next year after completing a deal to partner his predecessor as world champion at McLaren.

The 29-year-old told F1 Racing earlier today, shortly before his McLaren deal was announced, that he believes that he has the ability to do well against Hamilton despite rating him as one of the best in the sport.

"No - I think in Formula 1 you're racing against very talented drivers and we don't get here by chance," said Button when asked by F1 Racing whether he would be afraid of going up against Hamilton.

"But racing against any new team-mate is always exciting and it's a challenge. Especially racing against a past world champion. He might have only been in F1 for three years, but he has a lot of experience in a good team and a good car, so competing against him is definitely going to be a challenge.

"Would I fancy my chances against him? Well every driver would, every driver wants to show to themselves more than anyone else how good they are."

Button believes that you have to be willing to go up against the best drivers in the world in equal machinery to prove yourself in Formula 1.

"We all think we are up there with the best of them, but when you look at it you don't know if you are better than someone else unless you are racing against them in the same car," he said.

"You can say you are the best in the world and you can feel you are the best in the world but you never know until you go head to head with them."

The full exclusive interview with Jenson Button will run in the January issue of F1 Racing, available on December 17.

If the car's not up to scratch I'd say Lewis, if the car's great then it could be close and would depend on whether Lewis has his kinks ironed out. That's just my opinion anyway but will be good to see what happens.

Yeah sounds like he wants to beat the best, or at least try.

We'll see if he can or not

So what is JB's yearly salary?

6 mil a year from McLaren

Ah ok, I still think he should have stayed where he was but oh well atleast he is once again employed by a great team.

Well it's worth considering how realistic it was for him to stay. It's very likely Mercedes are waiting on Vettel. I suspect he'd rather jump than be pushed.

I think I can see why Button left Brawn now. He probably knew that Brawn was going to be bought out by Mercedes, so in that case I I'll retract the comments I said earlier about him. Good on him though, I'll be rooting for him to beat Hamilton.

I'm pretty sure he's not. I think his Red Bull contract isn't that long really, and it's flexible.

But it'll be interesting to watch Vettel. Red Bull could continue to be a worthy team, or he could take an opening at Merc or Ferrari within the next year or two.
