I'd never even noticed. I really should pay more attention to the drivers helmets, that's the 2nd time I've shown myself having no idea.

I remember reading about it some time ago. I think its a symbol for a rowing club that Graham used to be part of.

EDIT: all the Andretti's (Mario, Michael, Marco) have the same helmet design too.

Massa
Glock
Raikkonen

Kimi's now has more white! Very smart. Massa's is a sign of his country. Glocks is too. I loved JB's Silverstone design!!

I think Fangio should win...

When did the modern helmet shape come in? This one doesn't look very protective (nor does the car). In later years the likes of Jim Clark had helmets that came lower down their faces but they still had their chins exposed.

Full faces came in at the end of the 1960s with Piers Courage adopting a US Air Force style helmet in 1968. Jackie Stewart, a close friend of his was already experimenting with a bubble visor seen on motorbike helmets before also adopting a full face for (I think) 1969.

Thanks for the info gilles27 and for the guess McLaren, I should have guessed that Jackie Stewart would be one of those to experiment with improving helmet safety. The helmets of the 50's and early 60's look remarkably unsafe, I wouldn't feel comfortable driving around with my neck and face completely exposed.

And at the time he wasn't exactly appreciated for it.

I can't find anything that says they specifically were involved but helmets were improved between 1993-1997, as were many things due to Senna's and Ratzenberger's deaths. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Jackie Stewart was involved.
