F1 live:
In a confidential letter, the chairman of the British Racing Drivers' Club has reportedly proposed to sell the Silverstone circuit, the long-time host of the British Grand Prix which is set to present its final F1 round this year.

The leaked proposal, made in writing by Robert Brooks, would have to be backed by other members of the track-owning club. The move could theoretically be a shot in the arm to the hopes of the Northamptonshire track of retaining its Formula One status.

The British Grand Prix is moving to Donington starting next year, but amid reported problems the possibility of seeing the race postponed until 2011 has risen.

The Guardian newspaper claims that front of the queue to buy Silverstone could be the circuit's seasoned critic Bernie Ecclestone.

Should the F1 chief executive buy the Silverstone circuit, he could run the British Grand Prix at the venue "as he pleases."

The newspaper also claims that the BRDC, which has owned Silverstone since 1971, irritates the 78-year-old billionaire "intensely."

Shot in the arm maybe it is...

Much as I'm irritated with Bernie's treatment of SIlverstone, anything that makes its return more likely is cool with me - so long as he doesn't screw the layout up by hiring Tilke to "improve" it.

I don't get why UK doesn't deserve two races, but Spain does. The World Champion, World Championship Leader, World Championship-leading constructor and 2 other constructors are British. 3 of the other constructors are based in Britain. There is a Spanish double-world champion in F1.

If they earned two...Jeez, we deserve like a million.

And both Spanish tracks currently on the calendar are very boring tracks that produce the most boring races ever.

No country should have more than one grand prix, with the exception of the USA due to its size, in my opinion.

I would just scrap the European Grand Prix and replace it with the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao.

i'd have no problem with two spanish gp's but the tracks are usual snorefests

I certainly hope the silverstone discussion is not over. That track is a cornerstone of this sport and Bernie doing what he has done is a travesty.

:thud::thumbup: I agree with you Bill.

A European GP that toured tracks in Europe that don't quite merit a full time slot on the calendar would be amazing! We could go to:

Imola
Mugello
Donnington
Brands Hatch
Catalunya
Algarve
Hockenheim
Magny Cours

Spain shouldn't have 2 races on the basis that it doesn't have any good circuits. I would prefer the Spanish Grand Prix to be held at the Valencia harbour circuit and just get rid of Catalunya. I'm willing to give Valencia couple of years to settle in as it is quite a unique track and I love what they've done architecturally. Catalunya has had years to prove itself and is just a waste of space

There you go again. You can't even come into a silverstone discussion without bringing up your beloved. Seriously man....seek professional help. This obsession...it's not a good thing.

Back to the discussion at hand. I would far rather see two British races than two spanish. Someone mentioned two in the USA due to our size...but I don't think there are enough fans in the entire nation who have any clue what F1 is about to fill two races. It's just too complex for the american 'racing fan'. There is a large group of amateur racers who turn both ways, but you could likely fit every member of the SCCA in the seated area of Indy. That right there would be two thirds of the Americans who even understand a road course. Nah, I would rather see Silverstone three times a year than two races in the USA. First we don't have a track suitable other than Indy and our fanbase wouldn't support more than one anyway. By suitable, I don't just mean the track because tracks like Miller (WONDERFUL track by the way) and many others could be made to work on a strictly driving standpoint (with enough $$) ...but suitable for F1 also includes facilities and hotels etc on a scale that pretty much isn't available at any track I can think of. When I think of all the great tracks in the USA, I can't think of any with that kind of support around them. Most of the tracks are literally in the middle of nowhere....and they have to be, or our populace would have them shut down for noise pollution.
