I never had a feeling of sadness coming up.
And damaging? MM and many others don't seem to think so. On the contrary, the public at large took an even greater interest. It spiced it up like the yellow press does with things and (paying) people got attracted.

You make it sound like it was a smart business move by the FIA

Don't think the spy story was a smart FIA move. It was ok for the issue to be addressed and punished, but not with such a circus. They should have kept it quieter.

There was already enough attention to be drawn from a wonder boy rookie and the 2 time defending champion clashing and kicking it old school. The way it should be. Switching wins and fighting with the Ferrari post Schumacher duo.

In other words, there was enough racing going on that the FIA didn't need the silly circus...

To be fair, it probably did generate some publicity for the sport, that along with Hamilton's success and his feud with Alonso, which McLaren tell us wasn't really that bad, and then outcomes Hamilton with various remarks to the contrary. I think McLaren need to tighten up their PR department a little.

It certainly spiced up things on this forum anyway. :D

He's a facist dictator, so Mad Max and elections mix as well as oil or water (or Ferrari and McLaren fans at Monza). If we did things the FIA way, Ferrari would have the most moderators on the site. :P

This is all dejavu of 1989 Senna and Prost.
Prost (Alonso) having earned his stripes and Senna (Hamilton) the younger hotshoe who made his teamates blood boil.
A lot of people reminisce of Senna and yet many who worked with him likened him to a spoiled brat.
Prost under duress could not perform in the cockpit because of the pressure of team politics.
And history repeats, Alonso quits (Prost) but the war continues.
Heiki (Berger) will be Hamiltons (Senna) tailgunner I reckon.
Should be a fun year, let the war roll on!
