What have the top ten earners in sport gotta do with marketability? Marketability list correlates to popularity and fan following.
Earnings are mainly a function of which sport the guy is in. So Lewis is not in the top 10 earners, and?

I guess you didn't notice that the list I posted included endorsements.

You know, money that athletes are paid by sponsors because they are popular and
because do they have a fan following. Their marketability is translated into sales;
whereas, an athlete's status on any form of social media doesn't.

I did mention that there were not any F1 drivers who topped that list.

Just to refresh your memory, here are the two lists. Yours includes 3 soccer players,
2 tennis players, 1 basketball player, 1 football player, 1 golf pro, and an athlete.
I merely provided a more current list. Conveniently, the only F1 driver on either just
happens to be your own favourite: Hamilton!

The World’s Ten Most Marketable Athletes 2013
1) Neymar – soccer, Brazil
2) Lionel Messi – soccer, Argentina
3) Rory McIlroy – golf, UK
4) Robert Griffin III – football, USA
5) Usain Bolt – athletics, Jamaica
6) Novak Djokovic – tennis, Serbia
7) Lewis Hamilton – motorsport, UK
8) Cristiano Ronaldo – soccer, Portugal
9) Sloane Stephens – tennis, USA
10) Blake Griffin – basketball, USA

When Santander changed their mind about moving their sponsorship completely over to the Spaniard Alonso at Ferrari, and decided to continue at McLaren where its brand awareness had just shot up to 80%

Brand awareness may refer to potential customers; but, it does not translate "immediately" into sales!
That takes time and effort on the part of the company. And, if Button is Santander's "ambassador", I
would suggest they believe he has the marketability they're looking for now.

Also, I'm not sure where you got that percentage from, as that article doesn't refer to it.

Let's see if there's a correlation between followers and salaries/endorsements:

Driver & Twitter
Followers
Alonso 1 909 238
Hamilton 1 857 974
Button 1 660 045

 wrote:">Alonso still motorsport's top earner
1. Fernando Alonso F1 - $30m (salary/winnnings $28m; endorsements $2m)
2. Lewis Hamilton, F1 - $27.5m (salary/winnnings $26m; endorsements $1.5m)

3. Dale Earnhardt Jr, NASCAR - $26m (salary/winnnings $13m; endorsements $13m)
4. Jimmie Johnson, NASCAR - $24m (salary/winnnings $17.3m; endorsements $6.7m)
5. Valentino Rossi, MotoGP - $22m (salary/winnnings $12m; endorsements $10m)
6. Tony Stewart, NASCAR - $18.5m (salary/winnnings $12.5m; endorsements $6m)
7. Jeff Gordon, NASCAR - $18.2m (salary/winnnings $12.7m; endorsements $5.5m)
8. Sebastian Vettel, F1 - $18m (salary/winnnings $17m; endorsements $1m)
9. Danica Patrick, NASCAR - $15m (salary/winnnings $6m; endorsements $9m)
10. Jenson Button, F1 - $14m (salary/winnnings $14m)

Where both Alonso and Hamilton are top earners and top tweeters, you could argue a
correlation; but, then you have Button down at the bottom, without compensation for
endorsing products. Doesn't look like followers translates into marketability in his case.
And, then you have Vettel, who is in the top ten and doesn't tweet.

Correlation? Or simply coincidence?

I was curious to see how the drivers stack up, based on their endorsement.
Our F1 drivers didn't fare too well, in comparison!!

3. Dale Earnhardt Jr, NASCAR - $26m (salary/winnnings $13m; endorsements $13m)
5. Valentino Rossi, MotoGP - $22m (salary/winnnings $12m; endorsements $10m)
9. Danica Patrick, NASCAR - $15m (salary/winnnings $6m; endorsements $9m)

Oh dear, this is one of those catch 22 thingies

you dont get it, and there is nothing to get

I could counter by saying and proving that Santanders brand awareness jumped 20% to 80% in 2008. But then you now decide sales are important, so I point to Mercs record sales, but you will then decide followers are important, so we mention twitter, and we find out twitter followers dont mean anything, so we look at marketability, but that doesnt matter, not being in the top ten now matters
And Button is now one of several Santander ambassadors, so thats means a lot because its not Lewis

Ok, Sagi58,
Lewis is not popular, Button is a lot more popular
Lewis is not highly paid, 10 others are better paid
Lewis' social media followers dont mean anything, the numbers are distorted
Lewis is a creation of the British media, Alonso has more global appeal
Lewis did not beat Alonso to 2nd in 2007, they tied for 2nd and 3rd place
Mercs sales and marketing are totally unconnected to Lewis
Lewis' thread is not the most commented driver thread on this forum
The rookie Alonso did not blow away mentally and on track the 2x reigning WDC Lewis

Actually, it's you that doesn't get it; but, that's because you live in a world that's black and white.
Reality is not cut and dried. You comment that Mercedes is number one in sales and attribute
that to Hamilton; but, fail to mention it's "only" in one market that they've achieved this feat.
You choose to ignore the factors that go into compiling data, how it is presented and by whom.

You post Twitter follower numbers to highlight Hamilton's popularity; but, you don't provide a
framework/context within which to understand those numbers. Then you claim that he's bigger
than """"an"""" F1 team, again based on an UN-scientific method of data collection. Again, you
choose not to accept the fact this method of determining "facts" is flawed.

Your next project was to expound on Hamilton's marketability and provided an outdated list of
salaries; but, when faced with a more recent list, detailing sales and endorsements, your first
comment was that it was rife with NBA, NFL and tennis stars. When a comparison was drawn
between the two lists, you resort to sarcasm and patronizing comments.

That's cool. Have a great weekend! :wavey:

Lewis is without doubt as followed and known as any other driver, probably the one that commands most headlines and interest. Yes or no Sagi58? If yes what are you even contesting?

I provided the most recent industry compiled list of marketability - I.e how big as far as commercialisation, sponsors etc
This list was 2013. 2014 has just begun so .......
You provided a list of earnings compiled in 2014 - not the same thing, irrelevant as different sports pay more
Then to demonstrate how silly this has become you mention buttons twitter vs endorsements. Sagi58, even a nascar fan knows that McLaren drivers are not allowed individual endorsement deals,
So answer this please, is Lewis amongst the highest paid F1 driver (not NHL or NBA) on salary and endorsements , yes or no? If yes what are you actually arguing about?
Final question, is Lewis as a brand or as way of selling products bigger than the marrussia team, yes or no? If yes etc etc etc

Your irrational opposition to anything positive about Lewis can no longer be taken seriously in light of your lack of evidence, it's therefore easier to assume we are joking about this now
