People are talking as though the engine sound that has just left F1 is the same sound F1 has always had - it isn't.

I genuinely am perplexed at people fixating on the issue, and even more so at the suggestion that the racing itself suffers as a result...

I know. I'm with you, zurich, I like the new engines, and what they've brought to the sport.

People who are sh!tting all over the new turbos, by comparing them to what we've JUST had, are neglecting to look at several other decades' worth of different F1 engine noises.

Furthermore, the handling of these cars is so much more exciting. Less like they are on rails now, don't people think?

I like the fact people are making sweeping statements about how the new PUs have ruined the sport, and the feeling you get in your chest as they roar past, even though they haven't heard the new cars in the flesh yet.

On the TV, I think it detracts nothing from the spectacle of the 'race'. (infact you could say it adds to the atmosphere, as you can now hear the crowd, the tyres, the tannoy etc - making the TV viewer feel as if they are a bit closer to the race).

In real life, I can believe it might make a difference to the feeling and atmosphere of the race. BUT - seeing as I haven't experienced the new PU live yet, I'm not going to claim outright it has ruined anything.

Im going by comments from the blokes i go every year with. I trust their word on the subject, they too like me have been to races since the 80s so have heard the old turbos V12s V10s V8s.
Added to video footage, its not hard to imagine the lack of roar energy felt trackside by these new PU. We all have imaginations right?

And thats fine for you. I wont make up my mind on them until I actually hear them - regardless of what anyone else tells me.

Either way, I believe the sound makes up only part of the racing experience.

As Lew said - seeing the cars squirm on the tracks, and seeing the drivers actually have to drive the cars makes the race far more interesting.

To f1boy, listening to 2 sound clips on youtube, one sounds more pathetic than the other. Nothing wrong with that opinion IMHO

Even on a video, clip everyone can hear that there has been a difference, therefore it makes sense that everyone can rank both.

Standing trackside and listening to the engines is a different story, and one could hear the (downgraded IMO) difference between the 21k Toyotas and the 2013 15k engines. And therefore its not hard to work out from a clip if these 10k engines sound like better or worse than the 15k engines.

Depends what people like about the sound, but I think its clear that people have preferences beyond sheer volume, so some like the new sounds

But some are missing the unique high revs, nothing wrong with that

have you been to many races?

F1 races? Two - both in the 90s. Races in other series? More than I could count.

The difference between live and YouTube is like going to a gig then coming home and listening to your little stereo. You wonder where all the sound went. Which might actually be a good comparrison to the new engines. But you still listen to your stereo.

Stereos are so 70s~90s. Today we have ear buds and smart phones.

Some thoughts on the new turbo sound by Graeme Lowdon who is bound to know what he is talking about

"The sport's contact with most fans is via television, and the noise doesn't affect that in any way," he told Press Association Sport.

"There was some exciting racing, so in terms of a TV spectacle I don't think the noise impacted on that at all.

"The biggest impact with regard to the noise is in the commercial job we do, with the noise reinforcing Formula One is another world.

"That has always worked to our advantage in the commercial arena, in that people realised there was something very special about F1 when they heard that violent noise.

"In terms of what the fans hear now, it's a noise that has much more texture to it in that they're hearing tyres locking up for the first time and things like that.

"For the fans who were at the circuit on Sunday, there was a new set of things to listen to, so it's much more textural than we've had before.

"But the biggest potential change is that wow factor, which is important.

"Every team up and down this pitlane will be taking very important key decision-makers into the garages, and it's probably that more than anything else where there is an impact."

Thats the F1 magic he is talking about for those who have never experienced it live

I know I'll miss that engine scream it makes you tingle when you first hear it. It's part of the amazing experience of a live race. When I take people with me who haven't been before they're blown away when they first hear them even though I've told them what it's like. Twill be somewhat underwhelming now.

Yes, it will be like every other race series, loud engines, lots of different noises like turbos, and tyres etc, just like any other series, some better some worse

But that unique F1 sound that for me adds a lot of magic is gone. Those who only watched on Tv wont miss that unique mechanical insanity

Meh, I'm more bothered about the quality of the racing than the volume of the engines.

Melbourne was a great race, much more so than the late season snoozers of last year, even if they came complete with the screaming engines.

(And yes, I have been to Grands Prix live).

I wonder if they'll have more problems with animals making their way onto the circuits now.

I doubt we'll see much difference. Of course, it isn't as if the engines are silent.
