I only attended GPs with the V8s. I have however heard the roar of an F16 at 100 yards, and I've heard the 1812 overture with live cannon fire. Nothing beats a cannon for feeling the resonance in your chest. The F16 was loud but not painful, it was a different kind of sound. The thing with the old engines is that they were loud but they resonated differently, they howled for lack of a better word, they didn't make the same resonant impact in your chest that live cannon fire would but it would be uncomfortable to your ears to listen to them in any kind of prolonged environment.

I don't know whether I'll get a chance to go to Montreal this year, still weighing some finances, but it's clear that the new engines don't have that HOWLing effect, and I can see why people would miss it.

For me anyway, the atmosphere was totally lost watching on TV on Sunday.
The cars didn't sound like F1 cars and the racing was pretty poor too.

F1 isn't a cheap business, so all this trying to run fuel efficient cars is a bit daft imo.

How much does it cost to fly the F1 paddock around the world from March until November??
Aviation fuel bills must be huge, yet the FIA are trying to make the sport look like it's cutting costs by introducing fuel efficient V6 engines that have already cost the teams
huge amounts of money to develop anyway.

All that will happen is some of the fans will switch off. I don't want to watch the Clio Cup where the cars are cheap to run.

F1 is meant to be the pinnacle of motorsport, not an exercise in who can save the most cash, fuel, tyres.

For me every single time I was at a race, my brain reacted to the sheer mechanical insanity if the 18k and higher, and even the 15k engines, and I always had this painting in mind

Everytime it's the same, you forget about the sheer violence of the ultimate sound of mans folly until you are trackside then it comes at you again. The other races were never that visceral. I think F1 has lost some magic that could prove costly in the face of choice with other series

People are talking as though the engine sound that has just left F1 is the same sound F1 has always had - it isn't.

I genuinely am perplexed at people fixating on the issue, and even more so at the suggestion that the racing itself suffers as a result...

You have to remember that a lot of the membership are quite young and don't remember the 3.0L V10s, 3.5L v12 or the 1.5L V6 Turbo with the insane 4 bar boost.

I have the admit the sound is a bit of an anti-climax but it will soon become normal and nothing more will be said within 12 months!

Car engines revving their heads off at upto 21k, is the unique F1 sound, never heard anywhere else

Some sound bytes from Melbourne.
ESPNF1 "Sorry guys. Sorry guys. Really sorry… sorry guys."

Kamui Kobayashi not showing much contrition after his first-corrner accident with Felipe Massa.

"OK, wave your arms in the air, mate. Wave your arms in the air."

Jules Bianchi's race engineer might well be a fan of puppet film Team America, giving his driver this memorable piece of advice on how to deal with his predicament after stopping on the grid.

"OK, is it normal that I have no power?"

Even four-times world champion Sebastian Vettel is not 100% sure on how the new cars are supposed to work this year. It isn't normal, by the way, Seb.

"Engine is not running smoothly. I will get passed, so you are aware……Do something! I have no power, less IC than normal and no 'K'! No 'K'!.....That's ridiculous guys!"

And Vettel's mood gets worse a few laps later, as he throws toys out of his turbo-engined pram after realising retirement is probably imminent in his stuttering Red Bull.

"At the moment we have an issue with the radio, because I cannot hear you."

At least it is proof he listens occasionally. Kimi Raikkonen for once shows concern about the silence in his ears.

"This is mega, Valtteri. Good work."

Williams race engineer Jonathan Eddolls tells Valtteri Bottas he admires his work as he carves through the field. He should have held his tongue, though, as Bottas would end up scraping the wall two laps later, sustaining a puncture which would deny him the chance of a podium.

"What are the laptimes that the leaders are doing? Obviously not the Mercedes, but the rest."

Jenson Button under no illusions the rest of the field is in a race of its own as Nico Rosberg disappears into the distance.

"Why I get blue flags all the time? Every corner I get blue flags!"........ "Ignore them! You are racing all the cars!"

Marcus Ericsson is clearly not willing to settle for life at the back of the pack, and gets some memorable advice from race engineer Angel Baena about those pesky marshals and their flags.

"Is there nothing else I can do for reliability?"

In cruise mode from lap 19 onwards, Nico Rosberg tries to make sure he is doing everything possible to make sure he does not join team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the garage.

"So what at the moment? I don't have power, how can I overtake him?"

Sergio Perez clearly unimpressed with being told to pass Sauber's Adrian Sutil.

"Does Ricciardo have to save fuel, you think?"

Jenson Button possibly demonstrating a telepathic link between himself and Charlie Whiting.

"Brilliant! What a car you've given me. What a car… unbelieveable."

Nico Rosberg realises he could be in for a memorable year after taking the chequered flag.

"That's… that's really cool [laughs]. Wow.".......... "That's brilliant mate. I think we can see your smile from here. Nice job."

Daniel Ricciardo tries to digest becoming the first Australian on the Albert Park podium, and receives congratulations from race engineer Simon Rennie. Unfortunatly for Ricciardo, the smile would not last.

have you been to many races?

I like the fact people are making sweeping statements about how the new PUs have ruined the sport, and the feeling you get in your chest as they roar past, even though they haven't heard the new cars in the flesh yet.

On the TV, I think it detracts nothing from the spectacle of the 'race'. (infact you could say it adds to the atmosphere, as you can now hear the crowd, the tyres, the tannoy etc - making the TV viewer feel as if they are a bit closer to the race).

In real life, I can believe it might make a difference to the feeling and atmosphere of the race. BUT - seeing as I haven't experienced the new PU live yet, I'm not going to claim outright it has ruined anything.
