Today was my nine year old son's first day at his new school and first impressions weren't great. I understood that school started at 8am, when in fact my son had to be there at 7:50am, this was not made clear in any communication, so we arrived at 8am and was told we were tardy. I also wanted to talk to his teacher about my son who is autistic and he blanked me completely, words will be had when I pick my son up at 3:10pm, assuming that information is accurate!

Sorry to hear you had to endure that nonsense. Lack of communication is a complete bugger, and the teacher sounds like a completely arrogant, uninformed, self-absorbed right-winger.

I hope things improve.

Not sure why there wouldn't have been some sort of meeting with you and the teacher the week before school started.
Having said that, here are a few words to the wise:
Verify with the school office staff that your son's school records have been transferred from his previous school.
Set a meeting with the teacher at a mutually convenient time to discuss your concerns/expectations.
Ensure there is support staff that might be necessary for your son to succeed.

Just remember that you are your son's most important advocate and his teachers are a close second!
You all need to work together for his sake!!

The problem is that MOA lives in Kansas.

Not sure I follow... Did he just move there from G.B.?

He's being held there against his will. GET OUT while you can, don't delay. Kansas, the state that has effectively closed every abortion clinic, even though it's legal, the state has made it impossible from a regulatory compliance standpoint for a clinic to remain open, yet they're unwilling to provide an average education program to those same kids. They're shooting for bottom 20% of the country.

Life is political, we can't get away from that!!
Unfortunately, we all end up being a "casualty" in one way or another!!

Sounds an appalling introduction to school Myown! No prior introduction days? No parent meeting days? Particularly for a child with special needs. I teach the foundation ( first year at school) and building relationships with the parents and kids is paramount. My door was always open for parents before or after school even if it was just to chat about what they did at the weekend, build up trust and friendship. An appointment then can always be made to discuss any more serious issues.

Does anyone think schools are getting better or worse?

That will probably vary depending on the school. I toured a play around primary schools a couple of years ago, and I saw the whole range of different ones. I also suppose the definition of what is a "bad school" varies from person-to-person.

But anyway, some schools have certainly improved over the years, and some will have gone the other way. It probably works out the same.
