This is why Vettel was going for the undercut in the pit stops. This is why he was 0.7 seconds behind Hamilton when Lewis pitted and why he was eating up the lap times at that moment. What the safety car prevented us from seeing is not a top speed-handicapped Red Bull trying to overtake Hamilton, but Vettel putting in two or three lightning fast laps to jump Hamilton after the pit stops.

On old option rubber? And no it wasn't going to be a close thrilling race for second since we saw that passing, was rather difficult.

On old option rubber that the lap before, he was 1.2 seconds faster on.

Hamilton switched to the prime tires, which took their time to warm up. No way that Hamilton would have been on the same pace on his outlap again.

It's pointless to discuss the could have should have would have. The Hamilton fans are miffed he didn't get second, and the Vettel fans are surprised they didn't get first. Get over it, it's a new season, things have changed (for the better) and I for one am looking forward to the competition instead of the pole, win, repeat bore-fest that was 2011. Even with the lack of real passing in Melbourne, it was an exciting race, let's just enjoy that.

Very exciting race overall. The best bit for me was Raikkonen's blue flags radio.

As for Hamilton and Vettel, for me although Hamilton was possibly a little unlucky any sign of the bad luck was disintegrated - Vettel stayed ahead after the safety car and that was entirely down to skill. I think it was the right top 3 in the right order.

A good detailed article here on McLaren's race with some interesting bits about tyres, pitstops and safety cars.Adam Cooper interviewing Paddy Lowe.

Interestingly Paddy Lowe suggests that had lewis pitted the lap after Button on the second stop, instead of with him, not only would he have stayed ahead of Vettel but may have jumped Button.

"As Whitmarsh says, had Lewis stayed out and pitted the lap after Jenson his second place would have been safe. In fact there's an argument for saying that by so doing he might actually have stolen the lead from his team-mate, in which case their respective demeanours after the race might have been very different..."

his pace would have been better on his outlap than his inlap but whatever think what you like. Maybe in years to come you'll neglect this fact in your pointless 2012 thread without misfortune, but whatever.

But Racechick already stated McLaren always give the lead car priority pit strategy. Lewis lost the race at the start due to his own fault not McLaren holding him back...
