And uh, he's an idiot because he can't tell when someone's being nice to him for more reasons than just that they're a nice person.

Ouch, that sucks... but I'm not sure I'd go along with the adage of never talking to friends of the other gender about relationship stuff just in case they have a secret crush on you... These things just happen sometimes...

Bad luck Denthul, keep at it, I figure what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. It was worth a punt because you never know when someone feels the same way but is too shy to show it or something like that. You'd have regretted it if you'd have not done something about the way you feel. You feel bad now but you know where you stand now so that's probably good news for your friendship in the long term.

Hard lines, I've been through it before in school days when I told a girl how I felt about them and they just ended up taking it totally the wrong way, overreacting and never wanting to speak to me again.

And it's not like I said anything like "let's go have a shag now", or anything similar. And because of this, I have a "fear of failure" when it comes to women.

I think you mis-understood what I wrote. I told a friend who I don't have feelings for (but who has feelings for me) that I have feelings about someone else, but I hadn't realised that this friend thought about me in that way.
